I began my career in higher education in student activities and leadership development. This "hands-on" experience in student affairs allows students to have fun while "learning the ropes" to plan and market campus events, while at the same time learning valuable leadership skills necessary to become a success both in their personal and professional lives.
Realizing that job opportunities were limited in this specialized area of higher education, I decided to put my marketing and computer skills into action and went into marketing, and have since worked for two prominent businesses as a marketing database specialist.
Being a marketing communications professional requires wearing many hats, including that of editor, writer, proofreader, tech support (Yes, tech support!), researcher and teacher. You need to know your company's product, and also know how to be a professional back-up to your co-workers.
Since leaving the workforce to raise my children, I sharpen my marketing skills by volunteering as the webmaster and marketing liaison for my church. I love to be creative, and a non-profit requires lots of that when there's a limited budget. Although I enjoy the creativity of this work, I miss the ability to teach others.
Want to sharpen your skills from someone with adult-learning experience who's been in the marketing field? I'd love to help!
