About Kyra:

I am a recent college graduate with a strong desire to teach English and English as a Second Language. In the United States, I have worked in bilingual environments as a tutor and teacher, working with children from ages 2 to 10 from a variety of diverse backgrounds including Hispanic, Somali, Hmong and Chinese. Abroad, I have taught adult conversational English classes in Thailand and China, adapting curriculum to meet the needs of specific classes and individuals. I am competent in Mandarin Chinese, but am confident in working with students of any ethnic and language background. I pride myself on my ability to adapt lessons and help students reach their individual language goals, whatever they may be.

More On Kyra's Subjects:

  • ESL/ESOL

I completed my BA in International Relations in 2006. As part of my coursework, I studied abroad in China where I lead an upper level adult conversational English class, supplementing preexisting curriculum to suit the language goals of my students. In many instances I worked one on one with students to assist them in their language learning. Apart from my formal studies I also taught a functional English class in Thailand. Here I developed a completely new curriculum to give students a basic and functional understanding of English, as was their desire. During my studies in the US I was employed as and America Reads tutor where I worked with elementary aged children, assisting them with reading and English skills. Many of my students were Hispanic, Hmong, or Somali and were learning English as a Second Language. In my professional experience beyond college I have worked in a bilingual Chinese/English preschool, where my children were developing the most basic language skills in both English and Chinese. In this capacity I developed and implemented lessons in reading, phonics and English. As I have taught so many age groups confronted such diversity in leaning needs, I feel confident teaching any level of language learner.
