I first started playing the bass guitar when I was about 13 yrs. old. Well I really could not play it at first,it was more difficult than I had thought. I first had to learn basic music, which at that time I was taking as a freshman in high school. They taught me scales which consist of eight musical note, for example C,D,E,F,G,A,B and C an octive higher. There are sharps and flats, sharps are slightly higher tones, flats slightly lower tones. This was off of a piano, the bass guitar has a different structure, it uses strings and frets to divide the neck into different scales and tones. The biggest problem is tuning the instrument and it must be tuned before playing and tuned again after you complete a show or a set. The strings are metal so they will slide out of tune due to tempeture changes, humditiy and etc. You must learn to read tablture and know all the positions on the neck of the bass guitar. Unlike the Lead Guitar the bass keeps time and rhythm with the Drums. This is very important because if the bass does not keep time and rhythm with the drummer you will throw the whole band out of time and they will not like you and you could find yourself out of the band. I could not afford to purchase sheet music and they did not have the internet then so I had to learn music by ear, that is listen to the music and pick out what the bass is playing! This isn't easy but if you can do this it will help you a lot!! There will be times that sheet music can't be found for the song you what to learn how to play or the group you try out for puts on a song that you have never heard and ask you to play that song, and you really want to join these guys because they just really like rock you know? If you can pick up on a tune you just heard pretty quick, they will like you. But they will keep coming up with new tunes and this will make you a better bass player. When they compose orignal tunes you got to make up something quick! If this sounds to hard, well it is, this is not t.v. where it is phony or guitar hero, which is a joke! ha! ha! The more you practice the better you get. All I every wanted to do was play the bass and nothing else but the bass, I love playing the bass! I am a BASS PLAYER! Good equiptment is a must, you think the Pro's buy that expensive stuff for nothing? if you do, well hey you don't know and your not really into being a musician and I would be wasting my time trying to explain to someone who isn't really serious. I am serious! this is a fire that burns within and I only play with thoose who are like myself!! What can I say,I'm just the Bass Player!
