About Catherine:

Learning is a lifelong, continuous process. It is a privilege and a responsibility, since it results in accountability--we cannot excuse ourselves once we know. I am an eager and enthusiastic student and teacher. I am at times an instructor, a guide, a facilitator, a coach, an advisor, DEFINITELY a cheerleader. I will exalt in your accomplishments, accept your challenges as my own, and, if necessary, be saddened by any defeats, but only with the challenge of overcoming the next hurdle. I will not give up on you and your learning goals; and, if you allow me to, I will not let you give up on yourself. I promise.

More On Catherine's Subjects:

  • Bible studies

I have 35 years of experience as both a student and a teacher of the Bible, both the Hebrew/Aramaic and the Greek Scriptures (commonly inaccurately referred to as the "Old" and "New" Testaments, respectively). Any translation of the Holy Scriptures can be used, but an ideal translation is in modern English, not archaic, and restores the divine name to the original text, either in English (commonly, "Jehovah") or in Hebrew ("YHWH," commonly referred to as the Tetragrammaton, written in original language with no consonants, or with common vowels inserted, "Yahweh"). While my experience includes public speaking and teaching, my primary concentration is on one-on-one instruction individually customized to the student's needs and interests.

  • elementary (k-6th)

The abundance of afterschool programs and "homework helplines" speaks to the need for tutors to fill the role parents used to fill after school and in the evenings, coaching their children through homework. Most parents are not specially trained or qualified by experience to fill this role and are only unable to do so through the economic demands of making a living. I offer myself as a surrogate for this role, walking children through their grade school homework step by step, not providing the answers, but asking questions to help them reason on the answers. I teach basic math and writing (including grammar) to adults who have missed this key part of their early education and would find it gratifying to provide the guidance at an earlier stage, making it easier and more enjoyable to learn. I am a champion speller and have a love for spelling, vocabulary and reading--a love that I would be happy to share with others.

  • general computer

I instruct Microsoft software applications to adults and am often frustrated, as are my students, by finding that they haven't received the necessary pre-requisite training as a foundation for the instruction. They are eager to learn and are otherwise prepared for their classes; but some have not learned how to: turn the computer on; successfully use 'click-n-drag' or 'drag-n-drop' motions with the mouse; navigate to their files; save files; open files; open email; send an email; read an email; attach a file to an email; open the Internet; navigate the Internet; use a jump or flash USB drive; use a CD or CD/RW drive. Much class time is spent with these common PC uses, before ever we get to application instruction. These General Computer skills should be taught and mastered before pursuing instruction in individual applications. Patient, user-specific instruction is geared towards a non-traditional older student population and individuals entering or re-entering a now electronic workforce. Instruction should enable persons with little or no PC experience to navigate enough to apply for employment either on-line or at on-site employment kiosks.
