More On Stephen's Subjects:

  • composition (music)

Music composition is a skill that expresses what is in our ears, our hearts, but also what is in our experience. Even though we may apply certain learned techniques, we may find our work less than satisfactory. I call this the Solierie Effect. (Mozart had a rival/friend who lived his life in frustration because he could not write like Amadeus.) There is a cure, but it requires hours of listening and time spent with a caring teacher or mentor. I have written and performed music of a variety of styles since 1972. I have spent many years listening and dissecting classical, rock, pop, and world music styles. I have many examples of my music and orchestration available for evaluation. If you are serious about your writing you will find me a very helpful resource.

  • ear training

I can help you become a better singer or musician by helping you understand intervals, harmony, and rhythm. I can teach you how to read music, and how to harmonize by ear. You will appreciate and perform music so much more after a few sessions with me.

  • general music

I have lived, breathed, ate, slept, studied, and created music for my entire life. Would you like to know more about any musical subject? If you really want to learn, I can help you. I have seriously studied everything from Gregorian Chant, Early and Baroque music, Classical, modern styles to world music for many years. I can help you with music history, bringing out interesting aspects of the information which will help you identify with eras, composers, and styles.

  • music history

My many years of practical understanding and study of music makes me an ideal choice to help you understand the history of music. For centuries, there has been a tension between old and new music. Understanding this tension will help you put together centuries of amazing (and not so amazing) music.

  • piano

I can help you if you are interested in beginning piano and elementary levels. I can teach you how to play by chords and by ear. You will be a better musician regardless of your instrument if you study and understand the piano keyboard.

  • sight singing

If you struggle with sight singing I can help you. The ability to see a section of music in phrases will help you be a better musician overall. Let me help you get your skill to the level you need to have in order to maximize your ability and enjoyment, no matter what style or instrument you play.

  • songwriting

Songwriting is what I do. I spent 10 years in Nashville, Tennessee as a staff writer/producer. I have written many commercials and industrial scores for a wide range of clients. I have been a serious student of songwriting and have many many examples of my writing. If you find yourself stuck in a rut, I would be a great resource for you.

  • theatre

My entire high school experience was steeped in theatre, both on the stage and in competition. I have taught children's theatre, and have been an actor in professional and semi professional troupes. I ahve written plays and directed many productions as a teacher and as a music director. I can help you with your character, to be believable, flexible, and effective in your voice, posture, and appearance. Actors wishing to be better singers can benefit from my coaching. Singers who want to act can get serious assistance as well.

  • voice (music)

Almost every singer needs a teacher. Even the most gifted singers have someone who helps them, challenges them, and keeps them on track. Breathing and posture are only the beginning. Expression and control are what make a singer unique, especially in the pop music field. The basics are the same regardless of style, but you must learn from a teacher who appreciates the style you are seeking to perfect. I have helped many singers, from choir members to soloists. It is a great idea to hire a vocal teacher to help you in the recording studio. I have experience and the equipment to assist you.
