About Jacalyn:

I have been teaching/tutoring professionally for nearly 30 years, but I have been tutoring other students since second grade. Teaching is my passion. I have been gifted with being able to take complicated material and break it down into simple, easy to understand steps. Students come to me confused, lost and feeling terrible. In short order I have them understanding and excelling at the subject. When students follow my instructions and put in the necessary practice, they will become class leaders in the subject matter we are working on. I not only tutor the subject matter, but the way I teach builds self-confidence, self-esteem, and the belief that they can succeed.

I have taught chemistry and biology at both the high school and college levels. I have been tutoring in math (Pre-algebra to pre-calculus) since I was in high school. I have taught math at the junior high and high school levels. Math is entertainment for me. I love it!

What I love most in life is watching a student who has been struggling become a confident leader in that subject. I have lots of methods I employ to teach a concept. I believe it is my job as a teacher to find the language a student learns in. Different learning styles require different approaches to teaching a concept if a student is going to understand the subject at hand. Many students don't succeed because their teacher(s)presents the material in a way they don't understand. However, once a teacher finds the way a student learns, the student will understand and be able to excel at that subject. I have made a career of helping failing students become academic success stories.

I also work with students of exceptional abilities who want the competitive edge in their advanced or honors classes. I give them that edge and they become the leaders.
Everything I teach includes study skill tools that will enhance their efforts and maximize their learning and success.

More On Jacalyn's Subjects:

  • study skills

I have been tutoring and teaching for nearly thirty years. During this time I have studied how students learn and what tools will enhance their learning. I come at teaching from a biological background and thus look at learning as a physiological process. I try to use techniques/tools that will engage multiple neurological pathways to store incoming data in multiple areas of the brain, which will then give the student multiple resources for retrieval of the stored data. This makes learning easier and more entertaining. I have written a study skills seminar that has been used in schools, small group seminars, and privately with the students I tutor. I use the study skills techniques with every student I tutor whether it is algebra or chemistry or anything else. I have found that many intelligent students who are not achieving simply don't have good study skills. Often, if they can be taught organizational, data packaging, and retrieval skills, they can see tremendous success from their efforts. When students have not been successful at school, their self-esteem and self-confidence is usually in bad shape. Many have just given up and they don't believe in themselves any more. The work I do with these kids gives them hope. I work hard to help them get out of the negative spiral that is hurling them into a dark abyss. If students are ready to try some new ways of doing things, I can help them experience real success, success that will affect their future as well as their present situation. The skills I teach them are life long and can be used not only now, but in college and in their careers.
