Hi. My name is Kim and I'm a psychology graduate student (PsyD) in San Francisco at the CA Institute of Integral Studies. I've been working with middle school-aged youth, teens, and young adults for the past many years - as a tutor, mentor, counselor/case manager, and rec group leader. Most recently as a cooking/nutrition teacher at Mission High!
I have a lot of energy and creativity - which helps with making learning fun and interesting. I studied Creative Writing, English Literature, and History in school (at San Francisco State) - so my natural strengths are in reading/writing and history. I've also done ESL tutoring (Spanish), and have helped many youth pass their GED tests. I've tutored in-home, in youth shelters, and in after-school programs. I'm flexible, have a sense of humor, and am organized and goal-oriented as a tutor. I think learning and success in school depend on discovering excitement, interest in the material, seeing how it relates to our lives/world, and following our natural curiosities. Learning can be a real adventure!
I enjoy the challenge of working with young people with short attention spans, and/or who have a hard time sitting still in a classroom all day. I have some experience with special needs populations (social/emotional). I'm interested in different learning styles - and figuring out and working with yours - for your benefit and mine. My personal interests include bikes, plants/gardening, cooking, baking, art, wandering/adventure, and stories of all kinds. I'm learning how to play the violin, and I'm left-handed.
I look forward to meeting and learning with you! What are YOUR interests??
