About Kathleen:

A recent graduate of the University of Kansas, I majored in English, Spanish and minored in Linguistics. As such, I am quite proficient at the Spanish language, grammar, proofreading and editing, as well as knowledgeable in the field of literature. Furthermore, I was a member of the marching Jayhawks in the clarinet section all four years. I most recently worked as an assistant teaching English to international students, and have been doing that for about 2 years. I love personal tutoring and have provide one-on-one tutoring to a woman who, with my help, passed the SPEAK test and was allowed to continue living in the US and studying at KU. My tutoring style is fun but professional, geared toward being an enjoyable experience with results.

More On Kathleen's Subjects:

  • clarinet

I have been playing the clarinet since I was in fifth grade throughout my college career. That is a total of 12 years. I have performed with the Kansas City Youth Symphony, traveling to Prague, Budapest and Vienna to perform in renowned concert halls. I have participated in concert bands in the Olathe school district, in elementary, junior and high schools, and even in the University of Kansas. Most notably, though, I have been an important member of the clarinet section with the Marching Jayhawks. This involved a time and practice commitment unparalleled to any other activity I have participated in, and the scope of music played was three different shows a season as well as stand tunes, completely memorized. I have been in smaller pep bands that performed with basketball and volleyball teams. Over the years, I have helped lead sectionals and inspire other members through clarinet playing and have garnered many skills and experiences that can help me relay this information to those who want to play the clarinet.

  • ESL/ESOL

For the last two years, I have been an assistant in the Applied English Center at the University of Kansas. This center was open to international students who had to pass a proficiency test before they could enroll in classes at the University. I helped teach the lowest level, the fundamentals of the language and the basic grammar functions. I helped students improve their conversational skills and worked individually or in small groups to give them extra practice or reinforce previous learned lessons, in vocabulary or grammar. I have also tutored a woman from China, who with my help, passed the SPEAK test and was allowed to stay in the United States and continue studying at the University of Kansas. I studied abroad in Spain for six months, so I know what it is like to learn a second language, just like my students.

  • general music

I have played a variety of instruments throughout my life. I started playing piano when I was 7 years old and continued until my senior year in high school. I competed in the Mid-American Music Association's piano competition and received a Superior Solo ranking. I have also taught piano lessons to beginning students for a few summers after high school graduation. I have played the clarinet since I was 10 and continued to play in college, for a total of 12 years. I was involved in a variety of music groups, concert bands, symphonies, and marching band. When I was in 8th grade, I started playing the bass clarinet and played that through college as well. My experience in a variety of instruments makes me more than adequate in teaching general music, notes, rhythms, and reading staffs, as well as basic technique. I do specialize in woodwind instruments, I have played tenor sax, bass clarinet, clarinet, A clarinet, and the piano.
