About Debbie:

I have a BA degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in Graphic Design, with a Minor in English. I also have an Associates degree in Science from Central Ohio Technical College in Ohio, and coursework from Columbus State University in Columbus, Ohio, in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. I have worked in the medical field the past few years, but prior to that, I have worked in marketing as a copywriter and ad designer. Before that, I worked in engineering doing mechanical drafting with a certificate in that field. I worked for a company that produced fuel pumps and check valves for the aerospace/aircraft industry. I also did some contract work in drafting and technical illustration. I believe I can help others learn, because I have had to learn and absorb in very different fields. Visual learning, breaking down information, and acquiring great study skills helped me to pass my boards.

More On Debbie's Subjects:

  • drawing

Drawing comes naturally to me. My best media are pencil, pen, markers, and colored pencils. I also dabble with water colors. My degree in Graphic Design taught me how to think about what I am putting on the page. Illustration pulls creativity from one's mind and allows one to express and formulate on paper thoughts and vision. Let me help you with your drawing capabilities and let you explore your artistic talents.

  • phonics

Great communication skills are important for all aspects of life! Being able to make your words sizzle and capture the reader will make you stand out. More importantly, good grammar and good spelling show you are educated and capable, and pay attention to detail. I have a BFA in Graphic Design, and a Minor in English from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. I have an AS degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from Central Ohio Technical College in Newark, Ohio. I have written professionally for a marketing firm and this work included business communications, email advertisements for firms, such as an accounting and financial firm, newsletters, competitive analyses, and press releases. I have had to write instructions for engineering, on drawings and manuals. Phonics can be grasped from knowing how to navigate the English language, which is a composite of Old English, Germanic, Latin, Greek, and other roots. Learning phonics can be enjoyable, and when one is enjoying learning, more can be retained. Studies show that the more of your senses you engage in the learning process, the more successful you will be! Thank you! Debbie Portugal

  • study skills

I had to teach myself quite a bit while going to school. We were given the information, but getting it "into my head" and being able to retain it for testing was another matter. I believe it is possible to absorb large amounts of information, and also to understand it. Being able to explain it back in your own words helps you to "know why" and to use critical thinking in your learning. I believe my own experiences, which allowed me to be successful, can help others learn and feel confident!
