About Debra:

Hello!I am a lifelong educator in the fields of communication (written and verbal), behavior, religion, and music. I have taught children K-12, lectured and supervised college and graduate students, and conducted continuing education classes. I've also served as a private tutor and life/career counselor. My clients have included children and adults with special needs. Some of my specialties are: written and verbal communication skills; critical thinking; comprehension (reading and listening); and developing emotional intelligence. My primary training has been in the social sciences and religion, but my avocation is music, both vocal and instrumental. I have offered private lessons in introductory singing, brass instruction, reading music, music appreciation, and ensemble performance.I culminated a progressively responsible career in human services (both secular and church related) through the operation of a private consulting practice. I am now semi-retired, and wish to tutor for the sheer pleasure of contributing to the growth that comes with facilitating learning. I respect the potential of each student, and look for the learning edge that exists beneath the surface, where motivation lies. I begin my work with the student rather than with the textbook, and get to know them, so that I can find the best way to form a bridge between their interest and skills, to make the material come alive.I would be happy to entertain your specific questions about my training, interests, and teaching style. Thank you!

More On Debra's Subjects:

  • Bible studies

I will be happy to share my lifelong expertise in Bible studies with you as a tutor. I graduated from seminary with a Master's in Theology, studying both Old and New Testaments, and learning Biblical history, scholarship, and interpretation. I learned how to research the meanings of the original Greek and Hebrew, and to understand the culture and purpose of each writing at the time it was composed. I can explain how the passages held meaning for the audience of its time, and how we can understand its richness for us today. I am a lifelong Christian, raised Baptist, nurtured at a Church of the Brethren (Pacifist/Pietistic) College, and then graduated from seminary. I have served as a Bible study and retreat leader and preacher for many years, helping people incorporate historic Biblical and spiritual truth into their everyday lives.

  • general music

My musical training reflects accomplishment in both vocal and instrumental performance. I am an alto vocalist, having sung in church and community groups, doing solo work, duets, trios, quartets, and other special music, since I was a child. I learned to play the clarinet, viola, trumpet, and baritone, and finally chose the horn as my preferred instrument, performing in orchestras, jazz, concert, and chamber groups. I also played for a community symphony and numerous musicals --- the Sound of Music, Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, Man of La Mancha, and many others. I have given private lessons in both beginning voice and horn, and have conducted choirs and ensembles. I also served as Manager of a Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra for four years. I can tutor beginning music students to read music; to understand ensemble; follow a conductor; begin voice or instrumental performance; and develop appreciation for musical history and styles. Because this has been an avocation rather than my primary profession, I would be best suited to work with beginning musicians. Thank you.

  • religion

My education and work experience reflect a lifelong interest in ecumenism, an inclusive approach to understanding and embracing religious journeys. James Fowler, the pioneer author in the study of the stages of faith development, demonstrated that in order to have an owned faith, each person must explore spirituality for him or herself, rather than simply practice what they inherited from the previous generation. Some form of testing is needed, by examining other belief systems, and then choosing what speaks to your heart as true. I am a Christian with an M.A. in Theology from Colgate Rochester Divinity School, an interdenominational seminary. I have worked in interfaith ministries (including programs involving Jews, Muslims, and members of other faiths as well) to better the community. I have training, and have taught, in religious ethics, world religions, the relationship of church and world history, and the meaning and purpose of faith. I also have worked extensively in the areas of personal spirituality and values development. I can assist a student in exploring rituals, beliefs and practices of their own religion (even if it is not my own, without judgment), or learning about others. Religion can either connect us or divide us, depending on how we use it. Understanding it helps us to choose how we live.

  • study skills

One of the keys to success in my career has been the ability to comprehend written material, take notes, organize it, integrate it and apply it for future use. That goes beyond learning for a test. It means learning for life. Specific approaches to studying make this easier and more effective. I have developed curriculum for all the classes and workshops I've led over the years --- thousands of them. For each course, I utilize many of the same techniques that assist in study skills: reviewing the title and main subpoints to grasp the organization of the material; noting what the student should be able to know or do at the end, so they can be mentally interacting with the material as they read it; examining the illustrations, charts, graphs, captions, videos, and other supporting information to see how it supports the main points; learning to take notes and organize an outline to reflect this; writing questions for follow up and research. Taking breaks. Reviewing. Seeking help. Using resources and tools to define words, concepts, and expand understanding. Study skills mean learning to use the library, the Internet, resource persons and organizations --- much more than just being able to memorize the information in a chapter. It means making it part of your way of studying and seeing the world. Study skills also involve more than this, though. They also involve mental and physical preparedness: enough sleep, nutrition, quiet workspace, and the ability to focus without distraction. It means learning to pay attention, comprehend, and organize the information that is presented to you so that it stops being simply words and images, and starts having real meaning. When it does, the student will remember it.
