About Victoria:

I have a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and am an early retiree from the teaching profession. However, I find I miss the stimulation of seeing "the light go on" in my students eyes and am too young to not be active and involved in something I enjoy. Consequently, tutoring would fit my needs extremely well, I will be able to work with you and find fulfillment outside the regular classroom situation.

I was a reading specialist for 20 years in Pocatello and have spent the last 6 years traveling the country for the Success For All Foundation as a reading consultant. In that capacity I have worked with all types of students from Native Americans in Alaska, Arizona and Minnesota to inner city students in Phoenix, Boston and Chicago.

Because I worked with students with learning disabilities, I am very patient as long as students are making an effort. I also have many "tricks up my sleeve" to motivate students to excell and strive to be the best they can be.

More On Victoria's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

The majority of my career has been in the primary grades as either a Kindergarten teacher or Reading Specialist. As a Title 1 teacher, we have specific goals and criteria that our students must meet in order to continue to recieve Federal Funding. Failure to do so results in being put on "Program Improvement". In my 20 years as the Reading Specialiast, my school was never put on program improvement and I received various awards and commendations. In order to accomplish this I learned a variety of motivational and enjoyable techniques that I would love to share with you. I can tutor any subject K-8 but my specialty is helping you get the meaning from your reading in ways that enhance your comprehension. I also assist you with study skills, techniques and strategies.

  • ESL/ESOL

Language Learning for ESL students progresses through a series of stages. In each stage there are methods and procedures that assist students in moving to the next stage. Often classroom teachers are not aware of these stages and do not have the skills necessary to determine which level the student is functioning at. For example, a skilled ESL teacher will understand that the "silent" stage does not mean that the student does not understand, it may mean that they are insucure about their pronunciation or sentence structure. But, they do understand. Creating an environment where they feel secure is critical to their ability to progress.

  • phonics

Phonics are the building blocks of our language, but often they are difficult to master because students have different learning styles. Some get it through rote memory, those that have trouble generally are very "right brained". This means that they need to exercise creativity to remember things. Using music, motion and activities I have motivated hundreds of student to grasp these building blocks. However, I also have a wide variety of other tools so that sutdents are successful before they actually have mastered all the phonetic sounds.

  • study skills

Learning to understand what teachers want on tests is often a daunting task. Learning to recognize when teachers are making key points in class, then devising a uniquing system to help students remember these key points is central to any study skills program. Just as students have unique learning styles, they have unique study skills that must be discovered and enhanced for them to achieve. My career as a Title 1 teacher taught me to diagnose students study and learning styles and design curriculm to meet their needs.
