About Ric:

I grew up in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. During my elementary school years, I also took classes at Western Carolina University (Cultural Anthropology) and Appalachian State University (Astronomy). In high school, I excelled in foreign languages (travelled and lived in Mexico - studied at the Instituto de Estudios Iberoamericanos), and also in Business courses.I attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, majored in Political Science, minored in English and History, and graduated as an Outstanding Senior. I was also a member of an unusual combination of campus organizations.By profession, I am an Accountant, and have worked with non-profits, for-profits, large corporations, and small family-owned businesses.I have a wide range of experiences and interests, and look forward to helping you achieve your educational goals!I have an interactive, directed, and relaxed teaching style, so the student can be focused and not bored. I am patient, innovative, and challenging. I have always learned more (and better!) from teachers who made the learning fun, so that's the way I try to teach!

More On Ric's Subjects:

  • general computer

All my life I have had an interest in office machines, and when personal computers first went on the market in the '70s, I was taking classes in high school on the original TRS-80 from Radio Shack already. I learned BASIC programming there, and in my senior year I worked as a (the only) night-shift computer operator for a local dyeing and finishing plant. As a high school student, I had sole custody of this company's IBM System 3! While in college, I studied various programming languages, and was offered a position at Burlington Industries as an intern computer operator as well. Since then, I have also learned DOS, and many general skills that have become a part of almost anyone's computer experience: file management, routine maintenance (mouse & keyboard cleaning), assembling various components, even installing new hard drives, disk drives, and other interior boards and features. I am also experienced in downloading/installing software, and general customization for the user. My specialty is the Microsoft Windows package of Office software, though, as that's what I use primarily on the job. (I actually went into Accounting rather than Computer Science. Go figure!) Please let me know if I can be of any help to you!

  • sign language

I grew up in Morganton, NC, which is the home of the Western North Carolina School for the Deaf. Consequently, most of the population there is exposed to Sign Language just as a matter of the local culture. When I was in 3rd grade, my mom began working at NCSD, and I began learning Sign Language from her, as she learned it formally in her teacher's training. In high school, and again in college, I took formal classes in signing (did very well!) Also one of my best friends in junior high and high school has parents who are both deaf, and they also taught with my mom at NCSD. I spent a great deal of time in their home during those years, and continued to learn practical ASL from their entire family. My experience extends from informal training to formal training to practical usage, and on into the professional arena, as I served as the Sign Language interpreter for deaf clients at the Guilford County Health Department, when I worked there. (And my mom and I still chat away in public, when we want to speak privately! She was and remains to this day my best teacher!)
