Dear Students and Parents,My approach to teaching and tutoring is one based in years of practice, both as a teacher and more importantly as a student. I have BA in Art History with a minor in English, and a MA in Art History. I taught as a teaching fellow through three years of graduate school, and then returned to CSU to teach there for two years. In all of this academic experience I learned an essential thing: doing well in your subjects has everything to do with the experience you have learning it. My goal as your guide is not just to help with the immediate task and subject at hand, but to give you the tools you need to learn and be confident in any circumstance. This way the time we spend at home will teach you how to learn better in class or perform better on an exam. I also strive to help my students with verbal communication so that speaking up in class becomes something to be anticipated, not feared.   Dear Students and Parents, The early years of your education shape you into the learner you are for life: let those early years be filled with encouragement, success, and fun; let them be filled with experiences that become your frame of reference, become the place from which you view the world. When you begin with a sound foundation established on open and receptive ground you build a home. Consider the education of your child to be very similar. My role in the project is to be a guide, to teach your child how to be open and receptive to information so that the act of learning becomes effortless and desired. I have had many opportunities to work with children of all ages as a swim instructor, art instructor, university instructor, and as a nanny. In any environment the principles for effective learning are the same.   Dear Students and Parents, If you were a baker and someone asked you to put together a jet engine, wouldn't you most likely begin by reading the directions and selecting the right tools for the job? Your success depends on how well you do those things: how well you read the directions, how intuitively you respond to the material, and whether you have the proper tools for the job. Studying is really very similar. Often the hardest parts are following directions, trusting yourself, and selecting the right tools for the task. My job as your tutor is to teach you just how to do that. Studying is more than just sitting down with books, pens, and paper or at the computer. Studying is time spent learning who does what, when, where, why and how--even if you are dealing with numbers! There are tools and tricks of the trade that help any professional with their occupation: the same is true for being a student. With a few tricks of the trade you can raise your grades: take your Cs to Bs, and As seamlessly, and with tools you will use your entire life. Learning is a lifelong occupation.
