Hello. My name is Phil, and I'm a graduate student at NYU's Gallatin School. As an undergraduate, I majored in Politics, but I also studied French and Religious Studies. My academic interests are, notably, anthropology, political theory, European/East Asian history, and religion.

I have a lot of experience tutoring in these subjects, as well as in a few others. I have volunteer and professional experience teaching elementary-level ESL, beginner- to advanced-level French, Japanese language and culture, and techniques for effective writing. I have worked with many different students of all different learning styles and levels, cultural backgrounds, and ages ranging from Kindergarten to college.

  I have a lot of experience with students whose first language is not English. I have worked professionally with elementary ESL students (Spanish to English) on everything from basic vocabulary to issues of phonics and reading. I understand English grammar, syntax, and usage very well, and combining this with my ability to relay information in a comprehensible and well-thought-out way, I have been able to communicate this knowledge successfully to others. I also believe that one of the key features of successful ESL teaching is that relationships between English and the first language must be built and understood, and that this is not achieved through endless translation, but by studied repetition, conversation, and writing.
