Born and bred in New York, I grew up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I attended my local elementary and junior high school and spent most of my free time listening to music and swimming competitively for the Greenpoint YMCA swim team, the Sharks. Faced with a tough social situation and non-challenging curriculum I decided in 8th grade to apply to New York's specialized high schools. I was accepted to Stuyvesant and in September of 1998 I found myself taking the L train and then the 2/3 to Chambers St. in Tribeca for my first day of high school.
It was at Stuyvesant that I truly began to discover myself and grow into a happy and productive teenager. Surrounded by my intellectual and cultural peers I found myself flourishing socially while developing an avid interest in the arts. I became particularly enamored of my english and history classes and deeply involved myself in the student theater scene at Stuyvesant. I acted in and directed a number of plays and also co-founded StWOP, Stuyvesant's Studio Theater Workshop which allowed students to produce independent productions. This love of the theater stayed with me through college and still plays a very large role in my life as a professional actor.
When it came time to apply to colleges, I looked for universities that would provide me with an excellent all-around liberal arts education. I ended up settling on McGill University in Montreal where I studied History (with a focus on American history and particularly the Civil War) along with English literature and drama. I was actively involved in theater at McGill, acting in numerous productions and serving as the Producing Director of Players' Theatre, the oldest English-speaking black box theater in Montreal, for a total of three years.
Upon graduating in 2005, I returned to New York to professionally pursue a career as an actor. Since then I have performed in many off- and off-off Broadway Equity (the stage actor's union) productions. I have also done work on Guiding Light and recently had a small part in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.
Along with acting, I have also spent the past two years working in the children's department of Publishers Weekly where I managed the world's largest professional kids' bookroom. While working there I maintained relationships with publishing houses and regularly wrote articles for the website and print editions of the magazine.
As a tutor in the humanities I hope to bring my knowledge, expertise, and passion for the arts and share them with students in a way that not only makes new information easily accessible and digestible, but exciting and captivating as well. I believe in using a variety of techniques and mediums - including but not limited to books, plays, films, art, etc. - to introduce and engage students in the areas of history, english, theater and writing.
For students who are in need of specific test prep, I excel at multiple choice and essay style exams. Not only can I help students gather and retain the necessary information, but I can also impart any number of test taking strategies that will make it easier for them to succeed when taking these types of exams.
My schedule is flexible and I enjoy working with people from all walks of life as they strive to reach their educational and intellectual goals.
