About Heidi:

Hello! I am a recent graduate from Concordia University, Irvine (2008). The focus of my degree included, teaching in a variety of styles. Since learners favor either an auditory, visual or a kinesthetic approach to learning, knowing this and incorporating your favorite style into a lesson, enhances your ability to learn the material – this is my objective! Returning to college after having one successful career in photography, to start another career in teaching and tutoring, has been exciting! While at college, I discovered a great joy in assisting fellow students with their formal papers in the area of content, cohesiveness, proofreading, research and APA formatting. My GPA while attending Concordia was 4.0.With twenty years of photography experience, I have used 35mm, 2 1/4 and long-roll film. Digital technology moved in and I have embraced that technology since 2002. Over the course of this career, I photographed people (weddings, corporate events, parties, high school portraits, sports action, and even autopsies), but my specialty became pet portraits. In this market, I became a published, award-winning photographer. Knowing how to apply Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word Software skills are included within the territory of owning one’s own business. I created all my own business forms and edited all my own photography images. My career change occurred a little over two years ago when a friend asked me to tutor him; he wanted to switch from using his camera on automatic to learn how to use it manually because he wanted to improve upon the quality of his images. After our first lesson, I knew I wanted to become a teacher and I returned to college! He is a very happy student of mine since his work improved after a few short lessons! Presently, I am working on a master’s degree focusing on adult literacy.Since June of 2008, I have completed a "tutor training" course through the Orange County Public Library. The coursework trains adults how to tutor individuals who have difficulty with the English language (reading, writing and speaking). Some of the tools that I acquired during this training can also assist younger students with literacy issues.

More On Heidi's Subjects:

  • general computer

Knowing how to use a computer in today's economy and society is essential! Learning how to turn on a computer without fear of breaking it - comes to the forefront immediately! Once accomplished, learning how to search the internet, read e-mails, search for items and so on, can be very useful. Even looking for employment on-line begins with turning on a computer. Having owned my own business for over twenty years, I had to learn quickly how to create flyers and documents to promote my own business. I also worked quite a few office jobs ranging from dispatching from a computer program to reading fingerprints on the CAL ID computer program. I even learned ten key for a department store position! I will gladly assist you advance your computer skills (or lack there of) so you can reach your goals or buy that much desired item you heard about on-line!

  • photography

My love of photography led me to photo: weddings, bar-bat mitzvahs, portraits, pet portraits (my specialty), sports action, high school portraits, corporate events, product work (art work using the “dual polarization process”), autopsies and so on. Most of my career, I used film cameras so I learned the basics of F-Stop, Shutter and the ISO relationship with and without flash or strobes – the camera did not do the work for me! This has transferred well into digital work, as these three elements are essential to "knowing how" to manipulate your camera to create an image with a predictable outcome! Once the rules of photography (and art) are learned - one can feel free to break them with passion and creativity!

  • study skills

Learning how to organize one's thoughts can be half the battle when trying to accomplish a task! Let me assist in this area of study. Being able to brainstorm effectively, cluster or apply mapping techniques will improve your focus and ability to study. Setting aside the necessary time to accomplish assignments so you can advance to other subjects or personal affairs will prove to be rewarding. Having access to, if not the resources to complete a task can eliminate time you might otherwise waste. Moreover, knowing when to take a break is important. Sometimes returning to a subject after you have stopped thinking about it will generate new ideas or possibilities!
