About Barbara:

Hi, I retired 8 years early from California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB). I love teaching! My goal in life is to help other people become the best they can be. I know that I can teach anyone how to read!
I have a B.S. from Michigan State University where I studied Teaching and Child Development. I have a M.A.T. from Oakland University in Rochester MI. My major at OU was Teaching Reading. I also have a Ph.D. in Reading/Literacy. I was at CSUB for 20 years, teaching teachers how to teach people how to read.
In addition to reading I can also teach phonics. I know that inside out! I actually believe that learning phonics can be enjoyable.
I can teach you how to use Microsoft Word (I have 2 CA State Certificates for that).
I can help you learn how to speak English and use Study Skills, but my strengths are reading, phonics, and Microsoft Word.
I use a hands-on approach (not lecture and independent study). We will work together and I will never give up on you or become impatient.
I am a very happy person with a great sense of humor. Although learning something new is and can be work, it can also be fun, depending on how the teacher approaches it.
I hope you will choose me as your personal tutor.

More On Barbara's Subjects:

  • study skills

In my doctoral program I received instruction on teaching reading in the content area. Reading in the content area often refers to High School reading skills. One major aspect, aside from reading comprehension and vocabulary, is that of study skills. In order for students to be successful in school, they must have study skills. Study skills are one of my favorite areas of teaching! There are so many strategies that can be used. Depending on the type of text a student is studying there are numberous specific strategies that can be applied to help the student learn. Many of the strategies are graphic organizers. Most students love graphic organizers as they require drawing and a hands-on-approach. This is a fun subject to teach. I believe I can help many students with building study skills.
