Hi! I'm a stay-at-home mom of four. I have been an aunt since I was eight years old, and my mom was called Grandma by half of my hometown community. I worked in a day care my first year of college, and I have been around kids my whole life. I have experience teaching both small groups and larger music classes in my church. My oldest child has a triple combination of learning disabilities, and still reads a few grades above his age level. My next two kids both started reading well before entering kindergarten, and are both reading above their levels. My youngest is not yet two years old, so we'll see how that goes! So, as you can see, I am well versed in teaching children.
My college degree is a Bachelor's Degree in English. This included, among other things, two semesters of a course called Editing for Publications, a course specifically on usage (deals with proper/improper uses of phrases, etc., within the English language), a course on adolescent Literature, and a course called Document Design. My passion is Victorian Literature, but I am fascinated by all eras of literature and their ability to teach us about the society from which they come.
After graduating from college, I worked in a bank with corporate and municipal bonds and escrows. This meant working with a lot of numbers, which has always come easy to me, as well as reading through numerous pages of legal documents to make sure that accounts were administered properly. I worked here until my oldest child was 1 1/2, and I have been home since.
I have written online articles for a site called Suite 101 in their Cooking With Kids section. I quit writing for them when I realized that the site management's philosophies did not match my own. I have also written a few music reviews/artist bios for a site called AllMusicGuide.com. I briefly worked as a publicist for mystery writers through a local Texas company. I thoroughly enjoyed this work, but my kids had to come first. Kids always come first.
My teaching style is to find what works for the individual child. Each child learns differently, which is why the classroom approach doesn't always fit everyone. Some children need drills. Some children need things presented to them visually. Some need things taught to them in a story fashion. My goal is to get to know the child and what works for him or her, moving on from there. I would love the opportunity to help many children flourish.
