More On Michael's Subjects:

  • bass guitar

I have been playing bass guitar for thirteen years. I wanted a guitar and my grandmother, not knowing any better, bought me a bass. I have a naturally low singing voice, so it was a great tool to help me with songwrting at an early age. I have since gone on to play many styles on the bass, ranging from rock to classical, from metal to jazz. I have electric basses (fretless and standard). Unfortunately, I do not have reliable access to an upright doublebass, but I CAN play!

  • clarinet

I have twenty years experience playing clarinet in many different orchestras and nbands, ranging in styles from classical to jazz, from baroque to hip-hop. I am available for teaching all ages at all levels for clarinet in theory, sightreading, improvisation, sclaes/modes, and many other facets of this great instrument. I have clarinets of the soprano and bass variety, both in B-flat.

  • composition (music)

I have a lifelong pursuit of music. Compostion is an artform most musicians take for granted or simply never get fluent in. I have studied hard to have the proper skills for composing scores in an orchestral setting, lead sheets for a jazz joint and chord charts/progressions for a more rock atmosphere. I teach all levels on all instruments the art of music composition.

  • ear training

I have over twenty years experience in ear training. I help the student in recognizing scale tones and understanding intervals, or the space in between notes. I use recorded examples as well as live demonstrations. If the student is an instrumentalist and/or singer, I encourage the student in learning with call & response, sighthearing and songraphs.

  • guitar

I have fifteen years experience with the guitar. I commenced with the instrument not knowing much, nmostly playing by feel, then by ear and eventually by reading. Though I learned to read music with woodwinds, I did not immediately adapt this skill for guitar. I do find it is an invaluable tool in communicating and understanding music on guitar as well as every other instrument. I can teach all levels in theory, scales/modes, performance techniques, self-management and many other areas relating to guitar. I teach both acoustic and electric guitars and in many genres ranging from rock to pop to jazz to classical to metal to showtunes to hip-hop.

  • music history

In my experience as a musician, both on the performer and listener ends, I have come out with a vast knowledge of music history encompassing all styles over a many-century period culminating in the present time. From chanting to mp3s, I provide a full array of artists and styles throughout the history of music. My background as a student of Music Appreciation and Music Theory classes make me more eligible to teach this subject.

  • saxophone

I have 20 years experience in playing the saxophone. I started off wanteing to play the sax in fourth grade, but was told my fingers were too small and was thus given the clarinet to try. I did give the clarinet a go (and still play and teach that instrument) but I got into playing the saxophone. I began with marching band and slowly worked in jazz, symphonic and classical approaches with the horn. I currently play and teach on soprano and tenor (in B-flat) and alto (in E-flat).

  • songwriting

I have been involved with songwriting in many forms for quite a number of years. I first began writing in symphonic styles, more suitable for scores. I later wrote lyrics with chord progressions. I have since written over one hundred songs on guitar with/without vocals and on piano. I urge the student to listen more openly and intently in order to understand the art of writing songs at a more intense level.

  • voice (music)

I have been singing my whole life and have been a student under many great professional singers in varying styles. I teach all levels and all voice types. I teach opera, rock/pop, jazz and classical-style voice.
