About Eric:

Hello,

I have been performing and teaching guitar, music theory, ear training, jazz studies, and improvisation for the past five years in the NYC area.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in music education and classical guitar performance and a Master's degree in jazz guitar performance.
I also currently teach music in NYC public schools.

I have much experience teaching students of all levels, from beginners to the very advanced. Many of my students have gone on to pursue music at specialized music high schools, college music programs, or have careers as professional musicians.

I teach guitar techniques that suit all styles and music preferences. I focus on the fundamentals of playing the instrument and developing good habits, techniques, tone, and phrasing.

I encourage students to be open minded and listen to different styles of music, regardless of what their preferences are. I also help encourage them to be expressive and find their creativity using whatever musical style they feel speaks to them. Very often, I employ composition and improvisation into my teaching.

In addition to just learning to play guitar, I strongly feel that having an understanding of music theory and how music works is crucial to becoming a good musician and understanding the language of music. I stress the fundamentals of music theory and encourage my students to develop their ears so they can better understand what they hear and know how to play it on the instrument.

I also specialize in improvisation and Jazz techniques, if students are inclined to learn that. In addition, I teach other styles such as classical, rock, blues, folk pop, etc...

More On Eric's Subjects:

  • composition (music)

I have always been a student of composition and as a jazz musicians, am always composing and always will be. I perform many of my original compositions in concerts and record them in the studio. I have also been commissioned to write and arrange compositions for other people to perform. I feel composition is crucial because it allows you to use what you learn about music in a real life situation and expressive yourself with it. It gives you a chance to learn from the masters and try to emulate them if you wish, or contribute something completely original and unique that belongs to you. I compose music for many different ensembles and in many different genres.

  • ear training

I have studied ear training since I began learning music and continue to use it on a daily basis. Ear training skills are crucial when learning any instrumental and studying any style of music. The better developed your ears are, the better you can hear music and make sense of what you hear.

  • general music

I currently teach general music courses in the NYC public school system and am comfortable teaching it to students of any age. This could include playing an instrument, music appreciation, music of other cultures, music theory, and more.

  • guitar

I hold a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in guitar performance. I have formally studied both classical and jazz guitar and teach and am frequently performing them both at the professional level. I also frequently play and teach other styles of music, such as rock, pop, blues, funk, and more.

  • music history

I have studied music history from early music to twentieth century music and beyond. I understand the importance of knowing the evolution and development of music in order to fully understand it, and create music of your own. I incorporate the history of music in how I teach other aspects of music, such as performance, theory, ear-training, appreciation, and more.
