 About Nick:
Who am I…? I am a problem solver. In today’s society we are called “Engineers,” but they are really the same thing. I am an educated, successful, motivated, young professional. My combination of education, work experiences, and life experiences allow me to bring a unique perspective that other tutors may not. Extra money is always nice, but the money is secondary for me. I have a passion for helping/mentoring people in addition to an interest in psychology, human behavior, and human interaction. I look for every possible opportunity to interact with others and analyze human behavior. I graduated from Iowa State University in May of 2003 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering with distinction. Upon graduation I took and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam making me an Engineer In Training. Since college I have worked as a Sales Engineer for 4 years and as a Design Engineer for 1 year. I have a strong technical background thanks to my father who is a farmer and auto mechanic. In addition to my technical training and background, I’ve taken formal sales training and studied psychology. I am currently working on an independent study in behavioral psychology. I am studying male/female attraction within our human species. All-in-all, I am a very well rounded person with both people and technical skills. I have no formal tutoring experience, but I have tutored friends and family members since high school. My strongest subjects are math (everything up to calculus and differential equations), science (chemistry and physics mainly), and English (specialized in technical writing). I am an excellent listener and am able to easily put myself in other’s shoes. I have been able to help several people all with different learning styles in the past. I understand that what makes perfect sense to one person may make zero sense to the next, and that people have different learning and communication styles. I am able to explain things from multiple angles with examples from my real life experience as a practicing engineer. What can you expect from me…? Barring emergencies and acts of God, you can expect me to show up on time and ready to work. I don’t remember all the details from my college engineering classes, but give me a text book and I can solve nearly any problem. I don’t have all the answers, but I can usually find them. I work slowly, I write down all my steps, and I use a lot of paper. Paper is cheap, but mistakes are expensive. You can also expect me to be willing to listen-to and/or work-on what ever is needed. My only formal training is an engineering degree and a sales training certificate, but I consider myself knowledgeable in a number of other areas. Lastly, you can expect me to be a positive role model. I have my head on straight and my life heading in the right direction. I’m not going to lecture you on how to live your life, but the traits that have made me who I am today are evident in every task I perform. What do I expect from you…? I expect you to be willing to work hard. I love meeting people and making new friends, and I look forward to getting to know each and every person I get to work with. I believe that you can’t effectively do business if business all you ever talk about. But when it’s time to work we need to get down to business and stay on track. I am an extremely busy man and my time is valuable. I expect you to be familiar with the subject matter and be as prepared as possible. I understand there is a reason you are hiring a tutor, but I don’t want us to BOTH be looking at the material for the first time. If you feel that our expectations align and we could have a positive working relationship, please feel free to contact me. Thanks, Nick
