During my invaluable experience at a liberal arts university, I have had experience working as team member in planning, developing, and implementing events and programs with faculty, staff and fellow student leaders. Beginning college, I anticipated becoming an elementary educator, but found myself captivated by international affairs while studying human rights and development in Namibia. Within the smaller PLU community, my interest in the community and society as a whole evolved into taking part in various roles of leadership, communications and program coordinating. As a resident assistant for two years, my skill to multi-task and maintain campus positions, academics, work, and relationships provided me experience in setting priorities and balancing several demands. My experience in the non-profit sector involves an internship conducted in the fall of 2007 in Cape Town, South Africa. While there, I worked alongside administration to meet with local benefactors and volunteers which provided me insight regarding the workings of non-profit organizations. In this internship, I worked in conjunction with the Chair providing administrative assistance. This experience has continued to play a large role in my desire to be involved in social and economic justice in my community and take action at a local level.
My ability to connect with a diversity of people, generate student involvement and develop stimulating programs is also a result of my role as the program coordinator of the on-campus club, VISION (Voices In Sudan, Involving Ourselves Now). My work as an in-class tutor with MESA has provided me the experience to work in the Tacoma office and classes to assist with students in preparing lessons that engage students in academics and awareness regarding cultural diversity. I have also tutored Korean students and served an as elementary teacher’s assistant. These experiences supplemented by the fact that I am a daughter of a teacher, provides me with knowledge of general education infrastructure. I am also familiar with WA EALRs. These experiences have largely influenced me, as I identify with Facing the Future’s mission and vision to increasingly incorporate global and social issues in curriculum for teachers and students. With a strong academic background in political science and global studies, I also have a history with assisting in research , advocacy and program development.
I have always loved school and learning. Through high school and college, I have excelled in my coursework and enjoy working with others to help apply meaning and purpose to learning new concepts. I grew up playing soccer and continued to play recreational sports throughout college. I love the outdoors! In addition to my international experience, my academics, my work experiences, and my passion for international cultural and political affairs, I received a minor in religion and have a foundational understanding of theology, the bible and some world religions.
