Hello and welcome to my WyzAnt Web Page. I'd like to thank you for visiting and for considering me to tutor you, your child and/or person of interest.
1) About me:
I'm a 41 yr old lady with over 12 years teaching experience. I really enjoy playing music and teaching and sharing what I know with others; both the young (age 7 and older) and the young at heart.
2) My background and education
-Bachelor of Arts (piano performance w/minor theory/comp)-Boise State University - Aug 1987
-Master of Music (piano performance)- Univ. of N. Colorado - Aug 1989 [Suma cum Laude]
-Post Graduate study (Jazz/commercial Music...certificate program) Denver Univ. I've been pursuing this since 2004 as time and money will allow but have yet to complete the program)
3) Musical experience
I'm a seasoned professional musician with nearly two decades(20 yrs)performing experience in a multitude of musical environments and genres. This would include anything from solo piano performances, duos, trios, 4pc, on up through big bands and 60 piece orchestras. The styles include classical, jazz, blues, Latin, rock, R+B, and most contemporary pop styles.
I also have several year exp. performing church services and am familiar with traditional church music (i.e. hymms, sacred, liturgical music) gospel, and contemporary praise music
4) Teaching: Approach and Philosophy
The many diverse performing situations in which I've participated have enabled me to teach a number of styles. I can teach beginning through advanced level students in most styles. I have an upbeat personality and my passion for what I do is demonstrated in my teaching style. I believe in a positive approach and hope to get my students excited about music...to what to know more about it. I'm dead against the "old-school" method of instilling the fear of the almighty in people. I think the least effective manner in which to teach is to make the student fearful. This only leads to resentment, resistance, and often contributes to low self-esteem. In some cases, it can cause injury. Playing and istrument, or even a sport for that matter, with stiff tight muscles causes physical injury. The best method to convince someone to do something is to get them to WANT TO do it.
I also have a good sense of humor. Can you imagine the inspiration gained from a teacher who wacks you on the back of the hand while shouting "Dumpkoff! Play ZEE rrrright note". I can promise, anyone who studies with me will never have to worry about that happening to them (or their child) except maybe to poke fun at the types who actually see it as an effective teaching style!
