About Mary:

I love to write and teach people to write. I teach as a writer and not as a composition teacher. I approach all teaching as a coach. I do believe in practicing. I have taught English, writing, reading, and computers in the college classroom. I have also taught my own children and grandchildren. I rather enjoy teaching anything I can do to anyone who wants to learn. (Sometimes they don't want to learn, but have to.) I have taught Bible studies and Sunday schools at all levels. I like it because it is such a love letter. I have also played the piano for years. I can do this on an elementary basis. If you want a concert artist, that's not me. I have sewn all my life. I made my own wedding dress years ago and have made clothes from inside to out for women. I have also made men's clothes. Don't forget the quilts and crafts. I believe in making a safe place for my students to learn.

More On Mary's Subjects:

  • Bible studies

To the study the Bible is a habit with me. I have read it daily for years. I used to chose a different translation every year to read. I have taught Vacation Bible school for all age children. I have taught Sunday school for every age. I have shared with Women's groups and prayer meetings. At one time I went through a one-on-one tutorial with a pastor to check on whether I was really called. I don't believe I was called to preach today but I do feel called to write with examples of our Christian God in peoples' lives. While I am personally more involved with the New Testament and the love of Christ for the individual, I am also interested in the history and literature of the Bible. I find the Amplified Bible one of the best to help us understand the language of the scriptures without a concordance or a Greek dictionary.

  • general computer

Sometimes I feel like Mary Computerhands because I have lived with my computer so long and so much. I have been writing on my computer before Word came out in Microsoft. I remember DOS. I have been flexible and learned new programs as they came along. During my time at Western Kentucky University as a Master's student, I worked in the writing lab and did as much computer teaching as writing helping. At Fugazzi College, which was a small private college, I was drafted into the computer room and taught for a couple of years. We learned Office in that class. When I moved to VerizonWireless, their call center, I did some teaching whenever an individual needed to make present Power Point presentations or write papers and letters. I helped one co-worker learn Excel.

  • piano

I have been playing the piano for fifty years. That makes me a grandma. I have played for church, special choir numbers, and accompaniment for singers as well as instruments. I read music. I need it. I can sightread. I have taught young children to play. I haven't taught piano for some years but I would enjoy doing it again.

  • sewing

Sewing. I began sewing in 4-H. I took clothing to three county fairs and 2 State Fairs. I brought home ribbons. I taught my friends to sew. I helped the home economics teacher when every girl in Ohio had to take the subject back in the 60's. I did make my wedding dress. I took classes at a big sewing/fabric store in Jacksonville, Florida. I learned to make men's clothing and women's under garments. My husband modeled the pants and turtleneck at a Navy Wives' Fashion Show. I made all my kids' clothing as well as cabbage patch-like dolls, Raggedy Ann, and other stuffed toys. If it can be done with a sewing machine, I can do it. I can read patterns. I am patient with the student.
