About
Katherine: |
Teaching you new and better ways to find power over and delight in your world is what I do best. I have worked for 20 years with students ranging in age from infancy to adulthood on their communication and language skills. I have a plethora of training in language, English, reading, music, communication, special needs and general education which give me a solid experiential basis for my teaching. My formal education of a Bachelor's in Philosophy, a Master's in Speech-Language Pathology and uncountable continuing education hours give me a solid research base to dovetail into my experience. We will explore together the world of your mind and discover ways you can let me help you blossom. (If this sounds stuffy, I don't mean it to be. I'm just passionate about education!) |

Bible studies
I am certified by the School of Theology at Sewanee, TN, to be a tutor in the EFM (Education for Ministry) 4-year course. This course covers in-depth study of old, new and apocryphal writings. In addition, I have been a preacher for 14 years and have many text to assist in studying the scriptures.

general music
I cannot imagine my world without music. My home IS a speaker for music 24 hours a day, truly. In addition to playing piano and recorders, I have spent some years on percussion, oboe, bassoon, classical guitar, and guitar. My formal studies in college include analyzing and writing music from all time periods. Participation in choirs have exposed me to classical, jazz, world, Renaissance, medieval and popular music.

grammar
My professional training as a Speech-Language Pathologist enables me to be a true language maven when it comes to grammar. My study of other languages including Spanish, American Sign Language, French and Greek has enabled me to be aware of the complexities, and beauty, of English grammar. Those who have worked with me say I spare no ink when it comes to editing their writing. They also agree that their work improves with each testing of my grammar radar.

phonics
In my field of Speech-Language Pathology, I spend much therapy time with clients working on phonics, phonemics and phonetics. I am training in multi-sensory reading strategies and know the importance of phonics in the reading world.
special needs
My area of specialty in Speech-Language Pathology is augmentative and alternative communication. I have worked with children and adults with special needs for 22 years, focusing on their communication skills. I have worked with their teachers, home helpers and families to improve these clients' communication skills and to have a greater positive impact on their world.
