About
Derek: |
|
I have been tutoring individuals and small groups of students for more than 3 years at New College of Florida as a teacher's assistant to the Latin and Greek professors. I have been studying ancient language for nearly ten years and have dabbled in or developed expertise in more than 9 languages. Latin and Greek grammar can be challenging but I have helped many beginning students to understand such concepts as perfect passive particples, gerundives, antepenultimate accentuation, ablative and genitive absolute, direct and indirect discourse and many other grammatical, syntactical, accidental and linguistical ideas and terminology.
I graduated from a small liberal arts honors college which had an average class size of about 10 - 15 students, employed thorough student and faculty evaluations instead of numerical/letter grades, and fostered a close student-faculty relationship. No, as a tutor, I think a teacher should be able to accommodate the needs of the individual needs and personality of the student. I am prepared to provide detailed, structured lesson plans prepared for beginning students, or host casual reading sessions with cultural and literal commentary for the more advanced. Either way, I hope to encourage the personal interests of my students and meet their individual needs. |

Derek's Experience:
grammar
|
I have been studying ancient language for nearly ten years. I have self taught skills in Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Old English, French, Spanish, Czech, Italian, Dutch and Japanese. In my three years of employment at New College of Florida, I provided detailed and comprehensible explication of difficult and foreign grammatical, syntactical, accidental, and phonetical concepts. I have long found grammar interesting and have done much of my own research into linguistical studies. I enjoy reading foreign languages and breaking down the apparent grammatical concepts which they employ. As a native speaker of English, I both understand formal grammar and colloquial actualization's.

Greek
|
I have been employed at New College of Florida as the teacher's assistant to ancient Greek. I have tutored individuals and small groups in ancient Greek for more than three years.
I have graduated with a BA in Classics. As part of the requirements for my graduation, I have completed a senior thesis project. For this project, I translated with an introduction and running commentary the fifth century BCE Athenian comedy by the playwright Aristophanes, 'Bratrachoi', into English, "The Frogs". This work was published by New College of Florida.
