Sometimes having someone by your side to give that extra bit of support and encouragement could be the missing link in success at school. Not only do I want to help students raise their grades at school but I want to be a mentor, someone they can look up to. I will offer my knowledge of Spanish, English, and study skills along with my experiences that made it possible for me to go from an average student to going back to school and putting my self through college and earning a degree from UC Berkeley.
I have tutored students from Kindergarten to high school. The subjects I covered were ESL, English, Spanish, reading, writing, math, and algebra. Most of my experience was at Hilarita Computer Learning Center in Tiburon. The students were low-income, mainly from immigrant families. This was a very rewarding experience for my self, the children, their families, and Hilarita as a community. I have also tutored adults in Conversational Spanish.
I learned Spanish by attending a language immersion program in Puebla, Mexico for five months. I had four hours of intensive classroom work followed by two hours of private lessons. I lived with a Mexican family and signed a contract with the school I would not speak any English. I have an Associate Degree from College of Marin in Spanish and a Bachelor Degree in Spanish from UC Berkeley. I have also learned from international travel and from living with a family in the East Bay from El Salvador.
My teaching style depends on the student. I am very versatile and adaptable to situations. I rely on what the student is telling me by verbal and nonverbal cues and make a plan based on that. I am a good listener and problem solver. I have good study skills and a record of achieving goals. I am reliable and committed to doing what I can to help students learn and succeed. |

I will work with you to improve your pronunciation. I have studied the various sounds that make up English and Spanish. I have a good ear for accents and will be able to tell how you need to make changes to how you are forming those sounds.
I have studied phonology in the linguistics department of UC Berkeley. I learned Spanish as an adult and understand the difficulties of learning a new language. Phonics and grammar can be fun and with improvement your confidence in the language will grow. I would like to help you reach your goals.
