I am available to help children with tutoring in a variety of subject areas.
Training experience as a tutor
My primary professional experience has been with Lindamood Bell where I tutored children in grades first through fifth grade. I enjoy interacting and mentoring young learners, and was proud to be well-liked by both my colleagues and the students with whom I worked. I also am able to tutor adolescents.
Avid interest in learning and the promotion of learning
I have been an avid reader and learner all my life. I earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Anthropology from the California State University of the East Bay, and have also studied in the areas of English, literature, history, social sciences, anthropology, political science, philosophy, ethics and world and religious studies throughout my adulthood. As someone enthused about learning, I enjoy assisting others to explore their interests, and can easily integrate and communicate my understanding of many diverse topics. Many have called me a “natural teacher."
Desire to support children and involvement in children’s programming
I have always felt a strong affinity for children. In addition my tutoring experience, I have been affiliated with Stage Door Conservatory, a performing arts education program for elementary, middle and high school students for the past six years. I have been very gratified by my involvement with this program, which has involved direct contact with our students and their families.
Special interest and aptitude in the areas of English, reading, comprehension, writing and literature
Because of my life long interests in English and literature, I am especially interested in tutoring students needing assistance with essays or other reading and/or writing assignments or having difficulties with comprehension.
Experience as a father
I am a father and have been actively involved in supporting my teenage son’s development and progress as a student, assisting him to overcome difficulties with comprehension and homework management, and to recognize and draw upon his strengths as a learner. I draw form this experience in my work as a tutor.
Strong Student-Centered and Strength-Based Teaching Philosophy
I believe that education is most effective when it is individually focused, draws upon a student’s strengths as a learner and occurs in a relational context. I believe it is important to respond respectfully and thoughtfully to a child's questions and needs and to use positive reinforcement, I also believe it is important to convey a sense of curiosity about the subject or task being explored, relating material that may seem difficult or unapproachable to experiences in a child’s life that may evoke his or her interest and/or sense of mastery. In such an environment, we may hope that the rewards of learning will become apparent.
If you think I could potentially meet your needs as a tutor, I would be more than pleased to meet with you to discuss my interest in working with you.
Please feel free to call me at either 510-521-7504 (home) or 510-759-2965 (cell-phone) if you would like to speak.
Thank you for your consideration.
