 About Joyce:
Now, that I’ve passed the tests and become licensed in the some of the most intellectually challenging areas of business (law, investment, medicine), I can admit that I am dyslexic. Because I had a horrible time in my own early education, I swore an oath to help other people overcome their difficulties and fear of learning. Thus, I have been volunteering by teaching “Over coming math phobia” in prisons and halfway houses for over 20 years. Tutoring others, reminds me to back off on the demands I place on myself. I drive myself too hard at work (as a tax specialist, legal researcher, financial planner, and investment counselor). When I am tutoring someone, I slow down and listen to myself teaching how to learn and study in a low stress maximum efficient manner. I have retired from being a California lawyer, because I drove myself too hard when I was actively representing clients. Today, I only advise on cases (so I’m paid by hour and as an expert witness). I no longer want the stress of the actual litigation (which is always a gamble as to the outcome of any case). I prefer to be the intellectual behind the scene being paid by hour to research and write. I maximized my writing skills by legal brief writing under the paid by the hour time gun of active litigation. The training of litigation taught me to relax and write fiction for fun and profit (you’ve seen some of my work on ER and LA Law and other TV shows). Now, I like to be the gentle grandmother teaching individuals to overcome their fear of learning or taking tests. While working with you, I will be studying you for understanding of how the younger generations are learning. I will go into detailed descriptions of the way the brain and your entire physiology (posture, handwriting, diet) influence the manner in which you learn. I started college on scholarship in pre-med program at Cornell University. I got pregnant and married instead of going to medical school, so I switched over to medical technology and eventually graduated from the University of Maryland. My husband became a Marine Corps fighter pilot and I was stuck on Okinawa, Japan, with pre-school children at end of Vietnam War. I was able to hire a Japanese couple to raise my children, and I took a job working for the military as an academic adviser teaching Navy and Marine Corps personnel to pass GED and basic college math. Some of the men I helped with the GED in the 1970s, are today doctors and lawyers who still send me Christmas cards. Because I was stuck on a foreign island with no TV, I picked up a Masters Degree in accounting, so that I could teach basic accounting on Okinawa. The accounting degree led me to become a federal investigator for the SEC back in Los Angeles. I went from being the brokerage house auditor for NASD and SEC to being an actual stockbroker. I went to law school at Western State University of Law in Fullerton, California while working as a stockbroker, because I was involved in a really bad divorce and was sick of being pushed around by lawyers at NASD and SEC. My SEC background has made me an expert witness in broker fraud cases. The accounting background has led me to be a part of tax practice where I specialize in settling problems with IRS. The financial work becomes tedious with the same kind of problems repeated client after client, so I amuse myself by running a paralegal writing service and teaching. The writing and teaching keep my mind stimulated with latest scientific developments. The statement “If you want something done, find a busy person” has always proven to be true in my life. The more I do, the more I learn, the more I am able to write creatively about life. The joy of learning invigorates my life, and if my students embrace the joy of learning, they too will find joy and success in studying.
