I just graduated from Alhambra High School in Martinez and I am enrolled at Saint Mary's College in Moraga (ready to move in this fall), and I will most likely be studying for a double major: English (with an emphasis in writing) and Spanish. During my Senior year of high school I completed Spanish V AP with a 97%, Calculus AP with an 87% and was on Varsity Swimming and Water Polo as a freshman.
When I was young, I spoke Spanish with my Latino Grandmother, and although I had to hone most of the language's grammar in my first course during 8th grade, I retained my authentic accent. I completed all five Spanish courses with A's and B's. Also, twice a week for a year I have been tutoring a young Mexican 3rd grade student who spoke zero English at the start. This volunteer opportunity has kept me well practiced with my conversational skills. In addition, I have traveled to Spain and studied Spanish living with a host family through a school in Mexico called Experiencia. I feel very confident that I would be a strong, patient and dependable tutor for beginner and intermediate Spanish students.
As for math, although I passed Calculus without much struggle, I do not feel confident tutoring such a high math course. On the other hand, have been in advanced math since the 6th grade and I would be able to tackle any concept from Algebra I and Geometry.
Finally, I began swimming on a summer swim team when I was four years old and joined my first water polo team at age 13. I hold two swimming records, one in backstroke and one in the Medley Relay and I went to the North Coast Sectionals for Swimming and Water Polo my sophomore year in high school. Then, I found out I have Patella Femoral Syndrome and was unable to continue. Now, I have completed two years of physical therapy, I no longer have pain and, while I don't want to risk joining the team again, I am perfectly able, and am actually delighted to recreationally swim, play water polo and, of course, "tutor" both.
I am an outgoing, independent person and I enjoy helping people. I also consider myself very understanding and am not afraid to calmly go over any concept a million times, if that's what it takes. |
