About
Jessica: |
Hi! My name is Jessica and I love tutoring. I've been helping students of many ages in many subjects for approximately 5 years. I recently graduated from Westmont College with bachelors degrees in Music and History. My emphasis was vocal performance with most of my efforts concentrated on classical music and opera repertoire. I dearly love all aspects of music from composition to performance to music history. I have several years of sight singing training and trust me, it does get easier! I've spent the past 8 years working extensively with different choral groups, some large and some very small. I love chamber music and the opportunities it provides for development. I have coached voice students of all ages and my teaching style is highly personal. Vocal technique is a difficult thing to learn and the experience is different for everyone. My philosophy on teaching vocal technique is that the focus should be on what the student feels, physically in their bodies, while singing. I prefer not to burden students with technical terms which should be preserved for academics. Learning to sing is about learning to recognize how it feels to sing correctly. I also love music theory and all of my students receive general music theory and sight singing as I believe it is critical to the success of singers, young and old alike. |

Jessica's Experience:
ear training
I have several years of personal experience with ear training in both the choral and soloist settings. Throughout my own years of vocal training, as well as piano and violin, I have developed an excellent ear and perfect intonation. In fact, one choral conductor even stopped using a pitch pipe in rehearsal because I was more accurate. I believe the best way to train one's ear is to make music as often as possible and to listen critically to professional music making.

general music
I have a Bachelor's degree in music from one of the top liberal art's college's in the nation: Westmont College. I have spent the past four years studying all aspects of music including music history, choral music, orchestral music, opera and music theory.
music history
Music history was one of my favorite areas of study while in college. I am a diligent researcher and a skilled historian. My senior thesis from my most recent music history class is being used as a writing example for future classes. Music history was an integral part of earning my BA in music.
music theory
I have taken both basic and advanced music theory courses and found tremendous success in both. Tonal music is built on strict guidelines of which I have a very firm understanding. I can make understanding music theory very simple and enjoyable.
sight singing
Sight singing is an art of repetition. I learned it first hand in a choral setting, but I have also completed two years of strict sight singing exercises which went toward earning my BA in music.
voice (music)
I have taught vocal technique to students of all ages and seen impressive growth in each of them. My background includes vocal pedagogy, classical vocal training, and performance etiquette.
