My success as a teacher is my ability to bring a wide, eclectic intellectual world view into an acute focus for the specific needs of a particular human student. I am very good at getting students to do more than they think they can do. I began my college career as an electrical engineering student at Lehigh University; I graduated from Lehigh, cum laude, in American Studies. I earned an MA in Music Composition and Aesthetics at Wesleyan University. I am "abd" in American Studies in the Doctoral program at Yale University. As a full time professor in Cultural Studies, Music, Writing, Literature, Journalism and Education, I have taught at Yale, Wesleyan, Kingsborough Community College, Northeastern University, and Bunker Hill Community College. My teaching assignments have included courses in Music performance, music composition, music theory, jazz improvisation, World Music Theory, Freshman English, American Cultural History and Education policy. I directed the Writing Tutorial Workshop at Kingsborough Community College and I have designed and taught in a private pre-kindergarten. I was a professional print journalist in Trenton, NJ and Director of Pedagogy for the Jazz Is Toulon Summer Institute in France from 1989 thru 1995.
I have a career as a composer and performer in the Jazz tradition in the US and Europe, including a discography of over 25 commercial recordings. Since 1970 I have chosen to teach full time on the college level in English Departments and Music Departments; to undergraduates and graduate students; for remedial programs as well as for elite eastern establishments. I have organized day care centers, international jazz festivals, junior high school curricula and professional Big Bands. I'm very much at home with music composition in/for/with the theater. In addition to my academic and musical careers I have worked as a print journalist, City Planner and radio/TV producer and announcer.
I bring all of this experience to my teaching and learning environments. What I really teach is cultural literacy in the classroom or as mentor or as tutor. |
