Hi! My name is Leslie and I just finished my first year at Seton Hall University where I earned a 4.0 GPA both semesters. In high school, I took several AP classes (Calculus, United States History, European History and Spanish) and received sufficient scores on the AP tests to receive college credit for all of them. In college, I have completed coursework in education, English, philosophy, sociology, biology, religion and upper level math (Honors Calculus II and Introductory Discrete Mathematics). I was also a student mentor my senior year of high school and was responsible for tutoring other high school students in a variety of subject areas, including math, English and test-taking skills. Every summer from the summer after eighth grade until last summer, I volunteered with a program where I had the opportunity to tutor elementary-aged children in reading and math. I am willing to tutor any age or skill level and although I am very qualified to tutor math, most other subject areas (even if they are not selected on my profile) will not be a problem since I have very broad course experience. I do feel that meeting in person is the best way for me to successfully tutor students, so I would like to meet the students in a public place where they would feel comfortable with that. Also, students (or their parents) can discuss with me what they would like to be tutored in each session and I would be happy to look over the material beforehand so that I can make the most of the time that we have to meet. How I tutor would obviously need to vary based on the subject. In general, I would spend a few minutes talking to the student to figure out what he or she already knows or understands about the subject. I would spend most of the time explaining or giving examples, while periodically checking for understanding. Depending on the subject, I may give the student a short assignment to complete before the next time we meet if the student agrees to this, but I do understand that it is summer. I have a summer job, but the hours vary from day to day, so I will be able to work out morning, afternoon or evening meetings to work around the student's schedule. Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I look forward to talking to you soon! |
