Hello potential student!
Do you not feel confident in your ability to write, whether for school papers, application essays, or your own enjoyment? Do you spend hours staring at your computer screen (or blank sheet of paper) not knowing what to say, or how to say it? Think you have fantastic ideas, but just cannot access them amongst all the shopping lists and sports schedules and Tivo'ed reruns floating around in your head? Well then, let me help.
The best way to write better is to write. A lot. And that's just what I've been doing the last seven years. After graduating from the University of Michigan, I wrote a column for a local paper while freelancing for two years. Then, I spent five months at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, in Portland, Maine, where I learned the art of nonfiction writing and editing while profiling a French chef. I soon moved to Boston to attend Emerson College, where I graduated with my Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. During the program I taught Freshman Composition to Emerson undergrads, and will continue doing so in the fall. My own work has been published in magazines such as Down East, Transitions Abroad, and Paracinema, and I was a finalist for the Lumina Nonfiction contest in December 2007.
My teaching experience has been varied and wide-spanning. I co-taught a class of middle school students to put together their own computer. At a YMCA summer camp, I developed a week-long seminar for Young Writers Week and worked with 11-14 year olds on their fiction and poetry. Recently, I've been Lecturer at Emerson College, with my own class of 18 students, working together on Essay and Research Writing at the college-level.
No matter your experience, my goal is make you a stronger, more confident writer. I will tailor and focus my tutoring on whichever skills you need most: grammar, proofreading, drafting, revision, close reading, or even idea generation. Finally, I believe that when you're excited about something and having a good time, you'll do better and want to continue to improve. For many people, writing is a tortuous, dreadful experience. It doesn't have to be this way. Let me help you write better, right now.
