 About Stephen:
While living in Lowell, Massachusetts and attending the University of Massachusetts, I was offered the opportunity to be a substitute teacher for the Lowell Public School system. I substituted for grades 3 - 6 and for Lowell High School. During the summer of 1993, I was accepted to instruct in the Middlesex Community College Educational Out-reach Program. This was a six (6) week intensive preparation curriculum for junior and senior high school students focusing on college preparation. I taught mathematics from algebra and trigonometry to pre-calculus. I am very proud to say I received exceptional reviews from both the students and administrators. I was told I have a unique ability to explain difficult concepts in easily understandable languages by using real-world, pertinent examples. My brief stay in graduate school also at the University of Massachusetts -- Lowell campus, allowed me the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for a basic science class geared toward non-science/non-engineering students. This also was a very positive experience as I realized the entertainment value of being an educator. At this point in my life, I desire to return to the teaching/academic area because I miss sharing the knowledge I have and because I know how important it is to encourage young people in the areas of science and math. I feel this is vitally important to our technological advancement and improvement of our quality of life. I have been very fortunate to have a handful of exceptional instructors throughout high school and college. I try to emulate their dynamic energy, positive personalities, and passion for their profession in the hopes of improving another persons life; just as my instructors improved and touched mine. Not only am I a scientist by education, I also am a computer professional by occupation. I am currently employed as a sub-contractor working as a Computer System Administrator for the Space Flight Operations Facility at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California where I have been employed since April 2003. In May 2005, out of pure interest, I decided to become a Certified Massage Therapist. During this nine (9) month program, I was given the opportunity to teach and present on numerous functional human anatomy and physiology topics and massage therapy techniques. I graduated at the top of my class from Bryman College in Alhambra. In March 2006, I obtained my Personal Trainer certificate from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and specialized in Corrective Exercise. I earned the title of functional rehabilitation therapist and integrated fitness specialist. I enjoy working with people and assisting them to achieve their personal goals. Being a personal trainer is much like being a teacher without the exams. I learned it is the interaction and motivation that helps propel individuals to advance toward their goals. My long-term career goals is to maintain my affiliation with Jet Propulsion Laboratory and to advance in the teaching profession. I also am focusing on attaining my teaching credentials from the UCLA College of Education. I look forward to the opportunity to teach and instill growth, knowledge, and character. Thank you for your time and consideration.
