What is the best way for children to learn? If you grew up like I did, you sat at a desk in a neat row, listened to a teacher's direct instruction, answered questions out of the back of a book, filled in work sheets, and took tests. This works well for some children, but it is not optimal for every child. Each one of us has a particular learning style based on our natural intelligence(s). My approach to tutoring children is to discuss the goals the parents and child would like to attain, determine the child's learning style, set a target, assess the child's skills/knowledge, then backwards plan toward reaching that target. I am a certified K-6 NCLB highly qualified teacher with a Master of Arts in Teaching from Aurora University. I have substitute taught all grades from kindergarten through 8th grade for the past 3 years, including 6 weeks as an art teacher and 13 weeks teaching a 3rd grade class. During that long-term position, I was completely responsible for all lesson planning and assessment. I also taught a reading intervention after-school program to a group of 5th graders for 40 sessions (3 days/week). During my master's program, I worked with 4th graders for 16 weeks/2 days per week in a methods practicum and student taught 1st graders for 16 weeks. These experiences were in a Reading First school with a mandatory 90-minute block of reading activities each day. While I was student teaching, I tutored a group of children after school several days per week. This group included a 1st grader, 2 3rd graders, and a 4th grader. I also co-directed the school play including a cast of 40 children, grades 3 - 5. Many of these children considered themselves poor readers and we used this experience to increase their reading fluency. We all had a great time! It is important to me for a child to feel good about him/herself and to develop a positive attitude towards learning. I believe that all children are valuable and precious gifts from God. Every child has strengths and all children are capable of learning. I will work with your child to help her/him fird out how s/he learns best.
