About
Samantha: |
|
My name is Samantha and I am going to be a Senior at Boston College next year. I am studying elementary education and human development. I recently got accepted into the Graduate Fifth Year Program at Boston College, in which I will focus on Moderate Special Needs and earn my Masters degree in one year. Throughout my high school and college careers, I have interned at a clinic for children with autism, worked at an integrated pre-school, summer school program, and after school program, and volunteered to tutor Spanish-speaking elementary school students. At Boston College I have completed three pre-practicum experiences, in which I visited three different public schools in the greater Boston area once a week as a student teacher. In the fall I will travel to the Nixon Elementary School in Sudbury, Monday-Friday, working as a student teacher in a second grade classroom. Other than these rewarding opportunities working as an educator, at Boston College I also participated in the Appalachia program. Through this volunteer program, I went to Washington D.C. and helped build houses in a low income area. Furthermore, one week ago I returned from Italy, where I took a philosophy course through B.C. for a month. I am enthusiastic and excited about the possibility of tutoring this summer. I am especially interested in English, writing, and reading, but am open to other subject areas as well. I hope that you will consider me as a tutor this summer! |

As an elementary education and human development double major at Boston College, I have been afforded countless opportunities to practice teaching students at this age level. I have participated in three pre-practicum experiences in a second grade classroom at the Nixon Elementary School in Sudbury, a fourth grade classroom at the Beethoven Elementary School in West Roxbury, and a first grade classroom at the Gardner Elementary School in Allston. During each pre-practicum, I visited a school once a week for an entire semester and taught a variety of lessons throughout the program. For example, I taught several reading lessons, two writing lessons, a science unit on light and color, and a math lesson on division and remainders. Each semester I also worked with an English language learner for thirty minutes per week, focusing on reading comprehension, vocabulary, and pronunciation. These experiences have allowed me to practice different teaching skills and develop strategies that worked best for each student, classroom, and school system. I feel that I am prepared to tutor elementary school students in every subject area and am enthusiastic about this opportunity.

grammar
|
During the summer of 2007 I worked part-time for a law firm, Iannella & Mummolo, in which I edited their web pages, focusing on grammar and general proofreading. I know all of the grammar rules, apply them to my writing on a regular basis, and I received an 800 on the writing part of the SAT. I thoroughly enjoy helping others improve their writing skills and consider grammar a crucial part of this process.

proofreading
|
Last summer I worked part-time for a law firm, Iannella & Mummolo, where I edited their website pages. In addition to this valuable experience, through my classes at Boston College I constantly write papers and practice proofreading on a regular basis. I consider myself an advanced writer and have taken SAT classes through Beverly Crawford in Wellesley, who taught grammar and proofreading skills extensively.
