About Alvyn:

My ESL teaching career began 10 years ago in my piano rebuilding shop. I hired a Mexican national who could not speak English. He came to work an hour early each day and we would have an English lesson. I had no experience as an ESL teacher, but I enjoyed the experience so much that I began to teach an ESL class at a local Hispanic church on a volunteer basis. My interest in education continued to grow. I enrolled at the University of Phoenix online and received a Master of Arts Degree in Adult Education and Distance Learning in the spring of 2006. In August of 2007, I completed a 140 hour course in ESL at the International Teacher Training Organization in Guadalajara, Mexico. I have been teaching ESL part time at Grayson College in Denison, Texas for the past two years. My students are mainly immigrants from Mexico and Latin America. I differ with the ESL philosophy of "English only." For beginning and lower intermediate students, I believe to effectively teach, the teacher must at least have a basic knowledge of the student's native language. For this reason I feel I am most qualified and efficient teaching Hispanics. I speak Spanish and feel it is a great asset in explaining complicated English grammatical concepts. I also believe it helps students to be able to ask questions in their native tongue. When teaching as a tutor, one on one, I develop and design curriculum around each student. If they are planning to study in the United States for example, grammar and writing are greatly emphasized. If communication at work with English speakers or a vacation to an English speaking country is the need, then phrases, pronunciation, vocabulary, and idioms are the major themes.

I am recognized by the Mexician government as a qualified ESL instructor in Mexico. I currently employed as an adjunct ESL instructor for Grayson College in Denison, Texas.
