My name is Carolyn and I graduated Cum Laude from Suffolk University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Sociology. I am also part of the International English Society known as Sigma Tau Delta and the honor society Alpha Delta Pi. In addition, I completed coursework in pedagogy. I come from a family of teachers, so it is in my blood to teach. I am passionate about it. I worked for WriteBoston this year tutoring writing in the Boston Public School system. I have taken the MTELs and passed them successfully, my certification is for grades 8-12, though this summer I am teaching 5 English classes for Project Rise that are grades 5-9. I have the resources to teach/tutor younger students than my license in MA allows. I am used to working with students with learning disabilities, those who are on IEPs, as well as students whose English is their second language. In Boston, I worked with many Haitian students who were just learning English. My teaching philosophy is that I believe in true learning, and do not think that learning comes from memorization or drills. I think that students can truly learn something from a lesson that incorporates the skill into it. I think too often memorization is effective for the short-term, but after the exam students forget what they studied. This is why I believe in teaching so that the student has more than one way to remember the information, and therefore is not simply memorizing it for the test. I do believe that students learn by "doing," and not by listening to excessive direct instruction (lecture). I cater to all different learning styles and abilities. I am quite familiar with different techniques to reach any kind of student. I also feel that helping a child build self-confidence in his or her learning abilities is essential to the learning process because it provides motivation and shows him/her that learning can be fun. I also had experience in publishing, as I edited for a prestigious medical journal, so my grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills are quite advanced. I am a young, energetic, intelligent teacher who is passionate about the English language and literature; I look forward to assisting your child so that he or she has an effective and confident grasp on it as well. |
