More On Jesse's Subjects:

  • composition (music)

I was 16 when my music was first performed in public by someone other than myself. My choral piece "Ave Maria" was sung by the Belmont University Chamber Singers. While at Harvard, I studied composition with Elliott Gyger and Nicholas Vines. At Harvard, my composition "Psalm 23" was recorded by the Choral Fellows of the Harvard University choir and my string quartet "Breath of Shadows" was read by the world renowned Ying Quartet. My senior thesis, which received Magna Cum Laude, was a 45 minute song cycle for mezzo-soprano and chamber orchestra.

  • general music

I have played guitar for 15 years. I am well versed in blues, jazz, rock and pop styles. I am not a classical guitarist. I have played guitar with Kate Taylor, Carly Simon, Arlen Roth, Jim Belushi, Paul Ossola (former Saturday Night Live Band member) and Willy Mason. I have been a guitar teacher every summer since high school at varying levels of expertise, from complete beginners to more experienced players. Guitar is my first instrument and I consider myself an expert.

  • music theory

My undergraduate degree was in Music and fully 1/3 of the courses I took were in music theory. I studied with John Stewart, Howard Stern, and Christopher Hasty while at Harvard University. In college, I tutored other students in music theory. During my junior year in high scahool, I received a 5 (out of 5) on the Advanced Placement Music Theory examination.

  • piano

I have played piano for 12 years and have experience in classical, jazz, blues, pop and rock styles. My experience as pianist is mostly as accompanist and member of a band (rather than performing soloist). I studied piano and music theory with John Stewart at Harvard for 4 years. I have accompanied singer/actors in performance master classes with such artists as Marvin Hamlisch. My undergraduate music studies emphasized keyboard work as a part of studying music theory. I teach not only piano technique, but also how to use the piano to understand the big pictures in music. My background is suitable for all beginning pianists or for intermediate and advanced students who want to look at the way music works in addition to advancing their technique. I won't be able to instantly make you a world class concert pianist, as I am not one myself, but I will be able to make you a better and more sensitive musician.

  • sight singing

While studying at Harvard, I sang with the Choral Fellows of the Harvard University choir, a select 16 person group which sang daily at the morning prayer services at 8:45 am. Each morning, we would rehearse for 30 minutes in preparation for the service. The music we sang each day would not be given to us until the beginning of that day's rehearsal. We were paid by the church to provide music at these services. One could say that for the time when I sang with the Choral Fellows, I literally sight-sang for a living. Aside from this, I studied a full year of sight-singing and ear training as part of my degree. In high school, I received a perfect score on the sight-singing portion of the Advanced Placement Music Theory exam as well as perfect scores in sight-singing each time I auditioned for the Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-State Chorus.

  • songwriting

I am an active musical theater songwriter. My most recent project was a one woman semi-staged musical which received Magna Cum Laude from the Harvard University Music Department. Stephen Schwartz (composer and lyricist of Wicked, Pippin and many more), in a master class, described my work as brilliant.

  • voice (music)

I am an experienced classically trained tenor. My most recent teacher was Frank Kelley at Boston University. I have sung in many different styles including Pop, Rock, Blues, Musical Theater and Classical/Opera. I have sung in bands My classical background includes both choral and solo work. In college, I sang with the Choral Fellows of the Harvard University Choir, a select group of 16 singers who performed daily for morning prayers at the Harvard University Memorial Church. I am currently an active vocal coach specializing in musical theater style. I have experience working both with groups and one on one.
