My name is Amy and I am currently in my fifth year as a Spanish K-8 teacher. I tailor each lesson to the strengths and weaknesses of each individual student and provide opportunities for students to communicate their thoughts and ideas while simultaneously enjoying the learning process. I work hard to engage each student by designing a variety of activities that promote authentic communication. Activities I have incorporated in the past have included: role-playing ordering food at Burger King and exchanging Spanish currency; playing Guess Who to learn adjectives and playing Mr. Potato Head to teach body part vocabulary. I also use songs to help students improve their fluency. Regardless of the content, the students have fun while learning.
I attended Bloomsburg University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Elementary Education and Spanish. During my undergraduate work, I participated in two study abroad programs in Spain and Puerto Rico. I am currently enrolled in the Masters program at Moravian College where I am participating in teacher action research. I will be writing my thesis on strategies and techniques for teaching a foreign language. In addition, I have taken three ESL graduate-level courses towards my ESL teaching certification.
I have created and implemented a 5/6th grade Spanish curriculum as well as a K-8 Spanish curriculum mainly through the use of my own materials. Three years ago, I established and ran an after-school elementary ESL program that focused on teaching grammar and vocabulary in a fun environment. In addition, I taught at The Enrichment Center in Westfield, NJ for three years and tutored various levels of Spanish ranging from Pre-K through AP Spanish. I also taught an advanced 2nd/3rd grade reading course. I have been twice nominated as a candidate for the New Jersey Governor's Teacher of the Year Award. |

I attended Bloomsburg University and was an elementary education major specializing in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. I have completed all course work in the teaching of math, science, social studies, and literacy. As my student teaching experience, I taught a 10-week section of both AM and PM kindergarten as well as a 10-week section of sixth grade language arts and social studies. I currently am a K-8 Spanish teacher and instruct elementary students in grades K-6 on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I have extensively tutored elementary students through the America Reads Program and through a tutoring company, The Enrichment Center in Westfield, New Jersey.

I am currently a K-8 Spanish teacher and implement second language acquisition theories on a daily basis. I am enrolled at Moravian College in a teacher action research program in which I am writing my thesis on effective teaching techniques and strategies in teaching a second language. I have completed three ESL courses in language acquisition, methodology and assessment toward my ESL certification in addition to researching second langauge acquistion theories for my graduate work. In regards to practical experience for teaching ESL, I taught in a community ESL program in Cayey, Puerto Rico for six months. In addition, I created and implemented an after-school elementary ESL program in my school district. Students participated in fun and engaging activities in order to develop English language proficiency.

Although I am a Spanish teacher, I reinforce effective study and organizational skills on a daily basis with my students. It is crucial that students are not only directed TO study, but taught HOW to effectively study and take notes. Students need to be able to identify how to best study and take notes according to their individual learning style. In addition, I am able to demonstrate how to take notes using a variety of techniques such as outlining, using columns, as well as paraphrasing. I will also demonstrate how to create and use flashcards to aid in memorization as well as in organizing information. As a thesis graduate student, I have a great wealth of experience in gathering research and organizing the information into a concise research paper. I have experience working with all grade levels and can assist in basic study skills and organization skills to advanced research organization and data collection.
