More On Matt's Subjects:

  • ear training

I have studied ear training for five years as a music student at both the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Manhattan School of Music. Through my time studying Aural Skills, I have learned from talented teachers who taught me not only the skills needed to succeed as a music student, but also the skills needed to understand and teach ear training. In my coursework, I have also specifically studied the pedagogy of teaching music and ear training.

  • general music

I have studied music for twelve years, including five at top music schools. I have studied every aspect of music, including theory, ear training, music history, ethnomusicology, pedegogy, and piano, as well as intense study in music performance. I am also a freelance performer, and have the experience and understanding that comes with being a professional musician.

  • music history

As a music student, a special emphasis of my study was that of Music History. Beyond the standard sequence of general Music History taken by all music students, I have taken college courses in Renaissance Music, the Romantic Era, Twentieth Century Music, Performance Practice, Wagner, and Mahler. I have studied many musics from Gregorian Chant to Renaissance Polyphony, to 1990's Hip-Hop. I also have done special research on the low brass sections of 19th Century orchestras, and how the instruments being played changed over the course of the century in different parts of Europe.

  • trombone

I have been a brass player for twelve years. I studied Tuba at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under John Stevens and at the Manhattan School of Music under Toby Hanks. As a student of these world renowned performers and pedagogues, I have not only learned to play the instrument, but I have gained an understanding of the entire brass family, from their physical attributes to the literature that is appropriate for students of any age group. A large part of my studies in brass performance have been centered on the aspects of breathing needed to play a brass instrument most efficiently and effectively. Along with the Tuba, I play the Bass Trombone, and I have professional experience playing both. I have placed in the finals of competitions at the International Tuba Euphonium Convention, the Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Convention, and Wisconsin Public Radio, and I have won competitions at the Tubonium Tuba Euphonium workshop, as well as at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Manhattan School of Music.
