 About Kyle:
Teaching music theory and composition is at the core of my career. Whether presenting basic concepts to beginners, guiding a student through the undergraduate theory sequence, or exploring advanced topics in post-tonal theory, I find sharing my knowledge and expertise in music theory and composition most rewarding. As a part-time doctoral student in the DC area, I have good availability, and I am looking to tutor 10-20 hours per week. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Courses I have taught at The Catholic University of America (CUA) include music theory, ear training, and fundamentals of music (level-1 theory). I have also tutored privately for both beginning and advanced students. With seven years of private composition study and a broad understanding of diverse genres such as musical theater, traditional classical, and modern classical, my background makes me uniquely suited to help students of all ages find their compositional voice. I specialize in stage/theatrical music and writing for the voice. In addition to music, I have also worked as a university reading/writing center tutor, a children's theater program director, and a babysitter. I have experience working with students ages 7 to college graduate. Growing up with a sister and a brother seven and eight years younger than me, respectively, has helped me relate to students of all ages. TEACHING STYLE My approach to teaching music is tailored to the individual student and always focuses on his/her specific needs. In general, my tutoring atmosphere is reasonably informal yet structured to maximize efficiency. Early on I work to develop a basic outline of topics to cover and set concrete goals (curriculum). Then the work (fun) begins! EDUCATION I am currently pursuing my doctorate in Music Composition (part-time) at CUA. I received my masters from CUA in Composition (Stage Music Emphasis) in 2007 (3.95 GPA average in grad school). I graduated magna cum laude from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, with a major in Music Composition/Theory and minors in English Writing and Theatre Arts.
