About
Angelica: |
I'm Angelica,a contemporary vocal teacher who specializes in classic rock, modern rock, indie rock, blues-rock, pop-rock, alternative, and progressive rock.
I have graduated from Musicians Institute with an Associates Degree in vocal Performance.
I am proficient in sight singing, music theory, pitch correction, ear training, and background vocals.
I haven taken 2 years of guitar/vocal accompaniment lessons with Richie Castellano of Blue Oyster Cult and 4 years of piano lessons in NY. In high school I was part of a "New York State School Music Association" (NYSSMA)Chorus and participated in concerts and plays from the ages of 7-17.
I have tutored all my life, even while a student in high school as part of the National Honor Society. In college I was the go-to student if anyone needed help with vocal technique, deciphering background parts, and any questions they had in general.
I am a patient and easy-going person that would make the student feel comfortable. I make sure to explain concepts in a way that everyone, from beginners at vocals to advanced singers, can understand. I teach all ages and all levels of singers. I'm an easy person to learn vocals from.
I work on anything the student needs help with, be it technique or specific parts in songs they want to learn. If the student wants I can record their entire lesson or specific exercises so they can practice when not in lessons. With beginning students I start off with basic vocal exercises and help the student to understand the anatomy of the voice before continuing onto more advanced techniques such as bridging the upper and lower registers to eliminate "breaks" or "cracking" of the voice and the addition of vocal effects. Each student has different goals and artists they emulate and I will incorporate that into our lessons. I will keep a record of progress throughout each lesson so the student will not only feel their improvement but will be able to see it as well. I will answer any questions the student has, including the health of the voice/throat area and the maintaining of your voice.
I have improved immensely because of taking lessons throughout my life and would love to pass my knowledge onto others. I would love for others to feel the sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that I feel because of achieving goals I set for myself. With the help of my teachers my voice is exactly where I want it to be. Through lessons I increased my range (both upper and lower registers), gained strength, developed a strong and high chest voice and falsetto that I didn't have before.. and that's just the tip of the iceberg! Lessons helped me to gain confidence in myself as a singer and grow as a person and I think that everyone could benefit from lessons in multiple ways like I did. |

Angelica's Experience:
ear training
|
I graduated Musicians Institute with an Associates Degree in Vocal Performance.
Ear Training was a core, or required class that I studied for over a year. During that time I tutored other students who had trouble by using methods I developed that helped me in my studying of ear training. I found that my methods and patience when repeating examples helped them improve and do well in the class.
This class entailed that the student should be able to recognize diatonic and non-diatonic major and minor melodies, rhythmic figures, chord progressions, seventh chords, and variations in minor melodies.
The class really helped my ears, and now when I'm just listening to music for fun I recognize melodies and common chord progressions. It's really helpful when writing songs or learning them to be able to take down music without much trouble. I'll be in the supermarket and hear a song and be like "Oh that's a 1-6minor-4-5" and then start to laugh at myself.

music theory
|
I graduated Musicians Institute with an Associates Degree in Vocal Performance. Music Theory was a core, or required class that I studied for over a year. Throughout that time I maintained 4.0 average in the class.
We covered the areas of "musical notation, diatonic structures, rhythmic values, pentatonic and blues scales, key centers, inverted chords, seventh chords and extended and non-standard chord types, chord symbols, modes, modulation" and much more.
I also took a Music History Class at Fordham University in New York City that covered aspects of music theory.
During my piano and guitar lessons I learned theory to help my understanding of the instruments.
Theory is essential to being a well versed musician and I am proficient in this area of study. I tutor students in theory at Musicians Institute and have found that original methods I developed to learn theory myself are helpful to other students. I always find a way to make the student comprehend the subjects, relating it to them in a way they'd understand. Being a student in this area I know what's it's like and I have no trouble explaining theory in a way that anyone could understand it.

sight singing
|
To complete my Associates Degree at Musicians Institute I had to take a year and a half of sight singing. I maintained an "A" throughout that time.
The course went from basic skills to advanced sight singing skills. The main goal was to be able to look at sheet music, lead sheets, or vocal parts in general and figure out the melody and rhythm and to sing it in time.
We studied diatonic major and minor keys as well as odd meter. We spent a lot of time on rhythms and being able to identify common patterns.
The class was very helpful because now I can pick up music and be able to read and understand it in a short amount of time. It helps when writing charts or leadsheets because you don't have to be dependent on an instrument to write the chart (but of course it's definitely a good thing to double check yourself with one).

voice (music)
|
I graduated Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California with an Associates Degree in Vocal Performance. During my time there I maintained a 3.77 GPA. I studied subjects such as sight singing, music theory, ear training, vocal technique, vocal teacher training, keyboards and background vocals.
Before going to college for music I took Guitar/Vocal lessons with the bassist of Blue Oyster Cult, Richie Castellano, and took 4 years of piano lessons with Clarice Lipinkski (in New York).
At Musicians Institue I was the "go-to" person for my classmates who needed extra help in the subjects mentioned above.
