 About Kesia:
My name is Kesia. I graduated from Cicero North Syracuse High School in 2003 with a 3.5 GPA. I attended Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY in the fall of 2003. I am currently attending The University of Alabama in Huntsville as a senior. I have two majors: Psychology and Philosophy in which I have done significant coursework. I have a 3.5 semester GPA average for the 2007-2008 School year. My strongest points are reading, writing, analytical and deductive skills. I have written many essays for classes, all of which have gotten "A" grades. I have 3 years experience as an instructional assistant for special needs teenagers at Grissom High School. I interacted with all of the students in the classroom and the student I was assigned to work one-on-one with was diagnosed with autism. I attended team meetings on his behalf regularly and worked with him on his prescribed programs. I developed and changed my teaching strategies to match his changing personality and skill levels. I worked with him one-on-one in the classroom for subjects such as math, science, social studies, English and physical education as well as life skills training. I deeply enjoyed my time spent with this student. I currently work with a younger child with autism. I've been working with this family for one year now. We focus on a wide range of skills including behavioral issues. I’m glad to say that my student has made much progress with the help of his tutors. Knowing that many different intrinsic and extrinsic factors have an influence upon the rate at which one learns, I incorporate what I have learned through experience and college coursework into everything I do with my students. Each child is unique, so I try to build an understanding of their personality, learning style and the best way to reach them. I know through experience that students learn best when they are stimulated so as to be motivated to learn. Each student has a strong point to build on and grow. I take every opportunity to give students helpful feedback. I commend students when they have done well and give constructive feedback when they have missed the mark so that the student knows where they stand and goals stay within their reach. I keep in touch with parents so as to keep them abreast of what their child and I are doing during tutoring sessions. This way, I have found that I learn more about the student and are better able to anticipate his or her needs and meet them. For me, giving people the tools they need to get the most out of their lives is a large motivation and a fulfilling experience. I love learning new things and building on my own skills. Tutoring is one of my favorite things to do!
