My name is Jessie and I love and am brilliant at tutoring! My areas of expertise are music, mathematics, and the sciences. ***For the next few months I will be attending Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Due to school and lack of a car I am ONLY available to meet at Olin College on the weekends. If you are still interested please contact me and we can start right away!!Also please contact me if you are interested for tutoring in Carmel Valley/Del Mar (CA) from Dec 20th-Jan 18th or next summer, May 16th until late August. Thanks for considering me as your tutor! Below is the rest of my profile****High School Music*I went to Torrey Pines High School and qualified for the top Jazz Band (on saxophone) and Wind Ensemble (on flute) my freshman year. I took Jazz Band for all four years and Wind Ensemble for my first two and my last years. I took AP Music Theory my junior year (in place of Wind Ensemble). I have been playing flute for nine years and saxophone for eleven years! I’ve also mixed both jazz and classical genres for each instrument since the beginning.*AP Classes and SAT scores*My sophomore year at TPHS I took AP Calculus AB (though I qualified for BC), and AP Chemistry. My junior year I took AP English Lang, AP Music Theory, Calculus CD (through SDSU), and AP Computer Science A. My senior year I took AP Computer Science B, AP English Literature, AP Physics C, and Linear Algebra (through SDSU). My SAT II Math score is 800. I also received a 12/12 on the ACT essay writing section. I feel very qualified to tutor in all of these topics.*College Part 1 - OBERLIN COLLEGE*In 2006 Oberlin College of Liberal Arts and Sciences accepted me with the highest award of merit, the J. Frederick Oberlin Scholarship. Because of my heavy course load, transfer credits, and perseverance, I was able to graduate from this 4-year institution in 2 years and now have my first Bachelors (of Arts) Degree in Music (emphasis on History/Theory/Jazz). My last and most difficult semester I earned a 4.0. I have learned a lot about every aspect of music at Oberlin.*College Part 2 - OLIN COLLEGE*I am now attending Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, one of the top undergraduate engineering institutions in the country (comparable to MIT and CalTech). Olin only accepts 75 students a year and awards each student with a full-tuition scholarship. Olin is also a very hands-on engineering school and demands genius from its students. Because it is so small the acceptance rate is less than Harvard's. “What’s better than getting in to Harvard/MIT/Standford? Turning them all down!”*School Guidance*From my high school/college experience I can also help students navigate their way through the education system to get the cream of the crop no matter their level. Every school has tricks and loopholes that can be worked to your advantage.*Tutoring Experience*I have been tutoring my friends since middle school, tutoring my peers since high school, and tutoring professionally since my senior year of high school. I tutor all levels of math-from pre-algebra to Calculus, college-level Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. I also tutor in Physics and Chemistry, having taken two years of AP classes of each in high school (and a semester of Physics so far in college). Oberlin has greatly increased my knowledge of music theory and history and I want to spread that knowledge to any music who will listen. I have been giving private lessons on both flute and saxophone (in both classical and jazz) since my junior year of high school.*Computers and Technology*Both of my parents are computer consultants and as a result I have been around computers for all 20 years of my life. From high school/college classes I can teach computer programming in both Javascript and Matlab. I am very “techie”-oriented and can use and teach almost all computer programs, and I can solve many computer problems. I also have some experience creating and designing web pages (mostly html but also some css and C#). *Swing Dancing*And finally at Oberlin over two years I learned beginning and intermediate swing dance! I know how to both lead and follow and would love to teach this dancing tradition.*Me!*I love to see students succeed and appreciate that I can be part of that process. I am such a great tutor because I can teach from any angle and understand all sides of the problem, whether it is in music, math or science. Seeing from the students’ point of view is essential for tutoring so that I can make the student understand how and why a solution works so that they will remember it for the future. I also help students understand practical applications of the material so they will understand its importance and want to learn it in order to succeed.
