About
Jessica: |
My name is Jessie and I love and am brilliant at tutoring! My areas of expertise are music, mathematics, and the sciences.
***Unfortunately for the next few months I will be attending Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. My availability for tutoring in the Boston area is VERY limited because I do not have a car and I will be busy busy busy with school. Please contact me if you are interested for tutoring in Carmel Valley/Del Mar (CA) from Dec 20th-Jan 18th or next summer, May 16th until late August. Thanks for considering me as your tutor! Below is the rest of my profile***
High School Music I went to Torrey Pines High School and qualified for the top Jazz Band (on saxophone) and Wind Ensemble (on flute) my freshman year. I took Jazz Band for all four years and Wind Ensemble for my first two and my last years. I took AP Music Theory my junior year (in place of Wind Ensemble). I have been playing flute for nine years and saxophone for eleven years! I’ve also mixed both jazz and classical genres for each instrument since the beginning.
AP Classes and SAT scores My sophomore year at TPHS I took AP Calculus AB (though I qualified for BC), and AP Chemistry. My junior year I took AP English Lang, AP Music Theory, Calculus CD (through SDSU), and AP Computer Science A. My senior year I took AP Computer Science B, AP English Literature, AP Physics C, and Linear Algebra (through SDSU). My SAT II Math score is 800. I also received a 12/12 on the ACT essay writing section. I feel very qualified to tutor in all of these topics.
College Part 1 In 2006 Oberlin College of Liberal Arts and Sciences accepted me with the highest award of merit, the J. Frederick Oberlin Scholarship. Because of my heavy course load, transfer credits, and perseverance, I was able to graduate from this 4-year institution in 2 years and now have my first Bachelors (of Arts) Degree in Music (emphasis on History/Theory/Jazz). My last and hardest semester I earned a 4.0. I have learned a lot about every aspect of music at Oberlin.
College Part 2 In the fall I will begin again at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, one of the top undergraduate engineering institutions in the country. Olin only accepts 75 students a year and awards each student with a full-tuition scholarship. Olin is also a very hands-on engineering school and demands genius from its students. Because it is so small the acceptance rate is less than Harvard. “What’s better than getting in to Harvard/MIT/Standford? Turning them all down!”
From my high school/college experience I can also help students navigate their way through the education system to get the cream of the crop no matter their level.
Tutoring Experience I have been tutoring my friends since middle school, tutoring my peers since high school, and tutoring professionally since my senior year of high school. I tutor all levels of math-from pre-algebra to Calculus, college-level Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. I also tutor in Physics and Chemistry, having taken two years of AP classes of each in high school (and a semester of Physics so far in college). Oberlin has greatly increased my knowledge of music theory and history and I want to spread that knowledge to any music who will listen. I have been giving private lessons on both flute and saxophone (in both classical and jazz) since my junior year of high school.
Other Both of my parents are computer consultants and as a result I have been around computers for all 20 years of my life. I am very “techie”-oriented and can use and teach almost all computer programs, and I can solve many computer problems. I also have some experience creating and designing web pages. And finally at Oberlin over two years I learned beginning and intermediate swing dance! I know how to both lead and follow and would love to teach this dancing tradition.
Me I love to see students succeed and appreciate that I can be part of that process. I am such a great tutor because I teach from any angle and understand all sides of the problem (in math, science, and music). Seeing from the students’ point of view is essential for tutoring so that I can make the student understand how and why a solution works so that they will remember it for the future. I also help students understand practical applications of the material so they will understand its importance and want to learn it in order to succeed.

Jessica's Experience:
flute
|
I have been playing flute/taking lessons on flute for nine years and will continue for the rest of my life. As a freshman in high school I auditioned for the highest band and made fourth chair (two senior and junior were ahead of me). I continued to move up in wind ensemble as the years continued. Also I have played jazz flute as long as I have played classical. Although I have not taken as many lessons specifically on jazz flute I already have a lot of experience with jazz through saxophone. I have doubled on flute as the first alto player/baritone sax player in the jazz band (at Torrey Pines and other bands outside of school). I also qualified for and attended UCSD jazz camp on flute.
My senior year of high school I received first place in the annual San Diego Flute Guild competition. At Oberlin I studied flute as part of my Bachelors degree. I primarily focus on French classical music but have explored all genres covered by the flute.
I have been teaching flute lessons since my senior year of high school. I work especially on tone and mechanics of the student, and once the basics are covered we progress to musicality (never forgetting though!) I love working with flute students. Now is the time to bring music in to your life!

music theory
|
I have been a music student since fourth grade (11 years ago) and started learning music theory with my private flute teacher. In high school I took AP Music Theory and scored a 5 (the highest score) on the AP exam. At Oberlin my BA is *in* History/Theory so I took many many music theory classes. I took Music Theory I-IV (basic theory through avant-garde) and am qualified to teach younger students through Oberlin methods (emphasizing function and use of musical ideas rather than just defining them). In my Theory III class I wrote a paper analyzing a current piece of Romantic music that I was learning (available upon request). I also took Aural Skills I-III at Oberlin and am qualified for aural training as well as sight-singing and polyrhythms. I also took an advanced music theory course called Romantic Symphony and wrote two papers on Schubert's "Pathetique" and Mahler's "Resurrection" symphony (I can email my papers if interested).

saxophone
|
I have been playing saxophone since fourth grade (11 years and counting!). I love the saxophone for its beautiful sound and its texture in a jazz big band. I have played all of the four primary saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) but primarily teach on alto sax.
In high school I auditioned for the top jazz band and qualified my freshman year. I was loyal to the jazz band for all four years in high school, sacrificing my summers to history courses so I could stay in the jazz class. I have more experience with big bands than I do small jazz ensembles but can teach students all methods of jazz and jazz improvisation. I also played alto saxophone at the UCSD Jazz Camp as well as the Berklee Jazz Camp in L.A.
I have been studying classical saxophone for nine years and even stepped in for an alto saxophone in the Wind Ensemble when no one else could play it.
At Oberlin, although my emphasis was on flute, I continued my saxophone studies primarily in jazz improvisation. I played in the amazing and talented OJE (Oberlin Jazz Ensemble - the big band at Oberlin Conservatory of Music).
I have been teaching lessons on alto saxophone since my senior year of high school. I like to mix both jazz and classical genres since they complement each other so well on the saxophone. Don't start playing the sax without a teacher! It is easy to learn but hard to re-learn if you have learned something incorrectly. A proper teacher can point you in the right direction and make you a great music student!
