I spent many years in Germany and Austria studying to learn German and communicate effectively. At first glance, as I soon learned, the study of German required me to take a step backward -- yes, backward in how I regarded language acquisition - or, how we learn languages.
It was necessary to completely clear my mind of what I believed language study encompassed. A colleague told me that I needed to become "like a child" again.
How could I do that at age 22?
Living in Vienna, Austria, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a language and culture that goes back to Roman times. The city was called "Vindobona" meaning "good wine." In this culture, it was important for me to let the "sound of German" penetrate as I listened, resisting the temptation to try to translate every word, understand every phrase, when I did not even know the basic essentials of German grammar.
I watched German television, went to movies in German cinemas, stayed away from speaking English with colleagues and friends, and focused on vocabulary building and "getting that sound in my ears!"
Living in the country helped, but today we have new broadcast technology which allows us to see German language TV in the comfort of our own homes, through the satellite TV systems.
For me, learning German was important for my business...being an opera singer in a State opera house in Germany and/or Austria. With a Bachelors degree in German which I earned later at the University of Southern California, I was able to be competitive with native German opera singers. They wanted the same job I wanted, so, I had to learn to communicate in the language the way the Germans did to achieve this victory. I stayed for 11 years and sang in many opera houses in those countries.
