About
Michael: |
|
My BA has a major in English and a minor in Speech. My MA is in English with a slant towards literature. Actually, my college hours are fairly evenly divided between literature and composition.
I see my function as a teacher as one who enables the student to use the English language effectively. English is a tool, as any language is, to allow a person to communicate or understand communication. My job is to instruct the student in the use of that tool on whatever level they need instruction. |

grammar

I think that teaching English is enabling students to use the tool that is predominant in this country for communication. Correct grammar is a large part of that tool. There are innumerable tools that carpenters use to construct a house. Without correct knowledge of how to use the tools and without a correct blueprint to build by, the house will not be erected. So it is with grammar.
Grammar is the correct usage of nouns, verbs, punctuation, and on . . . and on. Yet, without this knowledge, novels will not be written, poems will not be formed, articles will not be published. In short, knowledge and literary art will not happen or be shared. Grammar is the glue that holds all linguistic achievements together.
It is a humbling experience to have a hand in teaching this most basic of tools of the English language. Nothing happens intelligibly in transferring thoughts to words on paper or monitor without this knowledge.

proofreading
|
As for my educational credentials, I have a BA and a MA in English. Of more use though is the habit I've had since an early age of voracious reading. Anytime something in a written work is not correct, or "right," it stands out to me. I then access my education and texts to put the official stamp on the problem grammatically, if it is a grammar mistake.
More times than not, it is not a grammar problem. It may just be clumsy writing or word choice; maybe just presenting a thought at the most effective place for your point, or thesis. In other words, not only can I proofread your writing, but I can edit it, help your work read better.

theatre
|
When I recieved my BA, my major was in English but my minor was in Speech. This is because my major earlier was Drama. When I changed to English, I was able to get my drama hours recognized as a Speech minor.I am sure I can be a useful resource for help with a theatrical problem.
