Personal computers are a part of everyday life both at home and work. They help keep our personal and professional lives organized through software, hardware, and the Internet. While the technology has become more stable, it can be complicated or challenging at times. I’ve been solving these challenges for quite awhile.
My first collegiate personal computer course was in 1983 on a TRS-80. There was limited software so I learned to write programs in BASIC that would work on the TRS-DOS operating system. I later learned to use the Apple IIe and the Macintosh when they were released. While these computers are now only found in museums, I’ve routinely utilized both PC and Apple systems over the past twenty years.
My profession is very computer and software intensive and my knowledgebase must be continually updated. In the biological sciences, we use computers to operate scientific instrumentation and to analyze the data they produce. In addition, specialized software for genomics, proteomics, and chemistry can be PC or Mac specific so I’ve become quite adept at switching between the two systems. At home and at work I’ve become the “go-to” person when someone is having computer issues. I’ve learned how to trouble-shoot software & hardware issues, networking, update software, maintain firewalls, remove spyware & adware, data backup, antivirus & security settings, and system maintenance.
I’ve used many Apple systems, and PC operating systems including: DOS, Win95, Win98, Win2000, WinNT, and WinXP. I currently use both a MacBook Pro and a Win XP system. I’ve used many types of programs with these systems. Scientific ones have included: GCG, Vector NTI, MacVector, Sequencher, Oligo, AssemblyAlign, Agilent Chemstation, and Amersham Unicorn. Some of the more common software I’m comfortable using are: FileMaker Pro, MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint), MS FrontPage, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, QuickBooks Pro, Retrospect, and DiskWarrior.
If you would like to learn to use a computer system, optimize your system, or learn to use your system more efficiently, we can work together and make it happen. Don’t let your computer stand between you and the world. I can help you to be self-sufficient with minimal frustration. I’m comfortable teaching up to the experienced professional level.
